[Report on the building of Fort King George], 1721 Jul 21.

Holograph manuscript, a contemporary copy of a report to Governor Nicholson in the form of a journal detailing Barnwell's work on the fort and description of the area. Barnwell also discusses his work sounding out the Altamaha River, the lack of reliable Indian scouts, and his discovery of a better location for a fort on St. Simon's Island.

Francis Nicholson was a member of the Council for the Dominion of New England and in 1688 was commissioned lieutenant governor of the Dominion. Colonel John Barnwell was commissioned by South Carolina Governor Francis Nicholson to establish the first of several forts envisioned along the southwest border of English lands in North America, in a step against French and Spanish encroachment. The first fort, Fort King George, was located by Barnwell on a high bluff three miles inland on the Altamaha River in what is now Georgia.
