Drinker, Elizabeth Sandwith, 1734-1807. Diaries, 1758-1807.

Title: Diaries, 1758-1807.

An invalid for much of her life, she composed memorandum books for her own personal recollections, which constitute a day-by-day account of the life of a well-to-do Quaker woman. Elizabeth Drinker's interests were diverse but she was little concerned with political or economic questions, except insofar as they directly touched upon her family. The bulk of the entries deal with strictly private or family matters, particularly the health of her family. Her detailed accounts of illness and the treatment of illness in her family over a period of almost 50 years are a source for the study of the medical practices of the period. She gives particular consideration to the Yellow fever outbreaks in Philadelphia after 1793, especially the epidemics of 1793 and 1798. Elizabeth Drinker and her family were consciencious Quakers and there is material on the Society of Friends in Philadelphia. Of special note is the material on the American Revolution which includes detailed descriptions of the treatment of Quaker non-combatants, and of the British occupation of Philadelphia, principally during 1777.

The correspondence (1785-1840), primarily concerns lands belonging to Henry Drinker (1734-1809) near Southport, Pennsylvania, and with financial matters, though there is also a letter (1792) from John Pemberton to Drinker, inviting him to dine with Native Americans. Letter writers include George Churchman, Rebecca Jones, John Pemberton, David Sands, Samuel Fisher, George Dillwyn, William Dillwyn, Henry Drinker, and others. One letter is from William Alexander to Nathan Kite (1840).

Title: Papers, 1747-1867.

The bulk of the collection consists of Drinker's business correspondence, including some of the firms of James? there is a good deal of material concerning the resulting controversy and non-importation. Of particular interest are the letters from Pigou and Booth, London merchants, showing the British point of view. Present, too, are several letters discussing the war-time disruption of trade. The collection also includes typscripts of correspondence, 1777-1778, between Drinker and his wife, Elizabeth Sandwith Drinker, written while Drinker was exiled to Winchester, Virginia by the new Pennsylvania government. Drinker's correspondence after the war, 1783-1809, is largely concerned with land development and speculation in northern and western Pennsylvania. His correspondents include: Benjamin Rush, Benjamin West, James Wilson, and Aaron Burr. Also included in the collection are other items created or collected by Drinker's descendants: a late 19th century transcription of Henry Drinker's "Journal of a Voyage to England," 1759-1760; business letters, 1808-1867, of Henry Drinker's nephew Henry Drinker, Jr.; correspondence and two journals of Drinker's grandson, Sandwith Drinker, including the journal of his voyage to India, 1838, and to Zanzibar, 1840, and correspondence addressed to Nathan Kite, Philadelphia merchant and one of the administrators of the estate of Henry Drinker; annual trial balances, 1833-1838, of John Wheeler Leavitt, maternal great-grandfather of Henry S. Present are James ? a volume of the firm's "foreign letters," 1772-84; Henry Drinker's own letter books, 1762-1809; his journals, 1776-1809; his ledgers, 1786-1809; and the ledger of the Atsion Iron Works, 1786-1801. William Tilghman (1756-1827; APS 1805) was a jurist and chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He held several positions as a judge and lawyer in the Philadelphia area and was active in the American Philosophical Society. He helped form and served as the head of the Committee of History, the Moral Sciences and General Literature for the APS and was elected the President of the APS in 1824, a position he held until his death.

Correspondence relates to Henry Drinker's forced exile to Winchester, Va. during the American Revolution. His letters home discuss in detail his spiritual well-being, his concern for his children as well as news of other Friends similarly exiled and efforts to present their case before Pa. and Va. authorities. Elizabeth Drinker's letters to her husband relate family and neighborhood news, Friends' visits and efforts on behalf of the exiles as well as concern for her husband.

This is a bound atlas containing 20 heavily annotated manuscript cadastral maps in Pennsylvania, 18 of which cover the areas of Luzerne and Susquehanna counties. Henry Drinker owned a large quantity of land in western Pennsylvania, and this is noted, especially on the 19th map of plots of land near Kettle Creek, which at its mouth joins the Susquehanna River.
