Henry Pleasants collection, 1693-1825.

The items in this collection document 1693-1825 Pennsylvania business relationships and persons as well as the American Revolution. Business documents, shipping documents, letters, journal entries and indenture certificates make up a majority of the collection. A significant portion of the collection concerns the Mason family's shipping interests. While not a strong aspect of the collection, Pleasants did compile some genealogical information on the Sisom and Mason families. Contains Captain Thomas Mason's account of a voyage to Europe to secure arms for the colonies, 1775-1776, and papers relating to his disputes, 1776-1784, with Robert Morris and Jacob Winey, his partners, over the proceeds of the voyage; letters, 1775-1783, written by Thomas Shirley of London give the viewpoint of a moderate Englishman on the American Revolution; commonplace books, 1789-1816, of Israel Pleasants, containing notes on insurance and other mercantile enterprises; and miscellaneous manuscripts of Thomas and John Mason, 1693-1825.

Henry Drinker, a prominent Quaker merchant in Philadelphia, was the son of Henry and Mary Gottier Drinker. He married Ann Swett in 1754 and then, after her death, married Elizabeth Sandwith in 1761. Drinker is perhaps best known for his exile with other Quaker pacifists to Winchester, Virginia, during 1777-1778.
