Diary, 1787-1788, describing trips through Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania as business agent for Philadelphia merchants John Field, John Thompson, Henry Drinker, Mordecai Lewis and others; also as land agent for Drinker. The diaries record business activity, much of it consisting of debt collection, and observations of people and places.

John Field was a wealthy merchant and extensive land owner from Philadelphia, Pa. during the later part of the 18th century and early part of the 19th century. Field acquired large tracts of land in Northumberland, Huntington, Luzerne, Lycoming, Dauphin, and Allegheny counties during the 1790s from noted land speculators Robert Morris and John Nicholson. Correspondence to John Thompson include a letter dated June 17, 1861 from his brother, Alexander Thompson, describing his arrival and activities at Camp Jackson in Columbus. A letter of Sept. 28, 1863 from Sgt. Major John D. Vance of the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company D informs John Thompson of his brother's death in the Battle of Chickamauga. Drinker, Henry, 1734-1809

Henry Drinker, a prominent Quaker merchant in Philadelphia, was the son of Henry and Mary Gottier Drinker. He married Ann Swett in 1754 and then, after her death, married Elizabeth Sandwith in 1761. Drinker is perhaps best known for his exile with other Quaker pacifists to Winchester, Virginia, during 1777-1778. Preston, Samuel, 1756-1834

Samuel Preston was a Buckingham Township, Pa. surveyor and conveyancer, born in Bucks County and died in Stockport, Wayne County.
