John Pemberton (1727-1795) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 25 (Old Style), 1727, the youngest son of Israel Pemberton Sr. and Rachel Read. Pemberton went to England for his health in 1751, and accompanied John Churchman on the voyage and on the preacher's travels in England. Pemberton first spoke as a minister in Penzance, Cornwall. Rebecca Jones was a Quaker minister from Philadelphia. She was born in Philadelphia, 7mo. 8 (old style), 1739, of pious parents of the Church of England. Her father, William Jones, was a seaman, and was lost on a voyage when Rebecca was a young child. Kary, Jones's mother, opened a school at No. 8 Drinker's Alley, which proved very successful, and she was able to give a careful education to Rebecca and her older brother Daniel. Henry Drinker, a prominent Quaker merchant in Philadelphia, was the son of Henry and Mary Gottier Drinker. He married Ann Swett in 1754 and then, after her death, married Elizabeth Sandwith in 1761. Drinker is perhaps best known for his exile with other Quaker pacifists to Winchester, Virginia, during 1777-1778.
