James, Edwin, 1797-1861. Letterbook, 1819-1906.
Title:
Letterbook, 1819-1906.
The Edwin James letterbook consists of letters to his brother John from 1819 to 1825. The letters chronicle Edwin James's appointment as doctor, geologist, and botanist with Stephen Long's 1820 expedition to the Rocky Mountains. The letters describe his trip from New York to Missouri via the Ohio River Valley, with comments on the geology, flora and fauna, as well as the people and towns of Missouri and Ohio. Although there are no letters from June to October 1819, James's letters resume after the expedition returns from the Plains. They describe the trip, comment on his companions, and criticize lack of the results. From May 1821 on James talks of settling in the West, of going on another Western expedition, about geology and geological publications. In November 1821 he first mentions working on the history of Long's expedition and his letters through June 1822 chronicle its production. Letters from 1822 and 1823 discuss his attempts to get government support for his own exploration of the Rockies, his failure to join Long's second expedition in 1823, and his life as army physician at Fort Crawford, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. The letterbook is accompanied by a few other papers of Edwin James and several documents related to his brother-in-law, Silas Reed, including a portrait photograph of Reed.

Colhoun, James Edward. James Edward Colhoun diaries, 1823-1830.
Title:
James Edward Colhoun diaries, 1823-1830.
This manuscript is a photocopy of a typescript version of parts of a series of diaries kept by James Edward Colhoun between 1823-1830. There are major gaps in the narrative. The periods covered are July 30-August 21, 1823; 1825-1826; and 1829-1830. The 1823 entries narrate Colhoun's activities during a survey expedition in Minnesota and North Dakota under the direction of Colonel Stephen H. Long. The 1825-26 entries recount activities at his plantation and his travels in Kentucky and North Carolina. The 1829-30 entries record travels to New England and back to South Carolina with descriptions of places, manners and people visited.

Title:
Wilbur G. Kurtz, Sr. visual arts collection, 1859-1972, undated.
This collection contains the family photographs of the Kurtz and Fuller families as well as visual materials Kurtz created and collected during the course of his career. Family photographs pertain to Kurtz and Fuller families as well as a few images from Annie Pye Kurtz prior to her marriage to Wilbur Sr. Also included are images of Wilbur Sr. and friends during his time in Chicago, Illinois. The bulk of this collection is photographic materials which support the research and field work Kurtz conducted pertaining to two events during the American Civil War: Andrews' Raid and the Atlanta Campaign. The collection also contains original works of art, primarily watercolors, which depict Southern historical scenes such as Civil War events; early Atlanta, Georgia; and private and commercial commissions of wide ranging topics. The collection also contains photographs Kurtz took of his completed work, most of which are not in this collection. In addition, there is a significant collection of sketches in various stages of completion that Kurtz utilized during the planning and creative stages of his work. Some of the sketches reflect the entire body of the final work while others are study examples he created for specific components of the piece, such as livestock, figures, and structures.
