Expedition journal, 1823 July 1-Aug. 21.

Photocopies of a two-volume expedition journal, including a few hand-drawn maps, kept by the astronomer and assistant topographer on Major Stephen Long's 1823 expedition to explore the Red River of the North and to establish the northern U.S. boundary at the 49th parallel. Colhoun's observant and detailed journal traces the portion of the journey from southeastern Minnesota to Lake Winnipeg. The first volume (July 1-29) is also available on microfilm.

Born James Edward Colhoun, cousin and brother-in-law of John Caldwell Calhoun (1782-1850). In 1829 he tried his hand at agriculture at Midway, a plantation on Rocky River near present-day Calhoun Falls, South Carolina. In 1832 he began to develop the nearby Millwood tract on the Savannah River. During the first year of operation, he purchased 900 adjoining acres.
