David Ives Bushnell was born 28 April 1875 in St. Louis, Mo. He was educated in St. Louis schools and in Europe. He worked as an assistant archaeologist at the Peabody Museum, Harvard University from 1901-1904. Benjamin Edwards was a member of what was originally known as the "Yellowstone Expedition," under the command of Major Stephen H. Long. The party spent the winter at Ft. Lisa, five miles below Council Bluffs. In the meantime, the War Department changed the destination of the expedition to an excursion by land to the source of the Platte River and thence by the Arkansas and Red Rivers to the Mississippi.
