Benjamin Edwards was a member of what was originally known as the "Yellowstone Expedition," under the command of Major Stephen H. Long. The party spent the winter at Ft. Lisa, five miles below Council Bluffs. In the meantime, the War Department changed the destination of the expedition to an excursion by land to the source of the Platte River and thence by the Arkansas and Red Rivers to the Mississippi.
