Baron Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett Dunsany was an author, aristocrat, adventurer, chessmaster, and soldier; he is probably best known for writing fantasy fiction, ghost stories, and drama under the name Lord Dunsany. Raised on the family estate in County Meath, Ireland, he was influenced by Greek mythology and the Bible. A member of the Coldstream Guards, he fought in the Boer War, World War I, and the Easter Rebellion. A prolific and diverse writer, he is considered an early master of high fantasy for the believable kingdoms he created and the vivid characters that inhabit them.

W. R. and Mary Hitchcock Wilde collection, 1898-1922.
The collection consists of letters and other materials from the printer/publisher Elizabeth Corbet Yeats of the Dun Emer and Cuala Presses (Dublin, Ireland), the publisher Thomas Bird Mosher (Portland, Maine), and the artist and storyteller Pamela Colburn Smith. The Elizabeth Corbet Yeats/Dun Emer and Cuala Press material consists of twenty-nine letters and notes from Elizabeth Yeats to W. R. Wilde, written between 1903 and 1919, mainly, though not exclusively, concerning the books and broadsides he purchased from the Dun Emer and Cuala Presses, and one letter from AE (pseudonym for George William Russell) to Elizabeth Yeats, November 1910, which she then forwarded to Wilde. In addition, this part of the collection contains various ephemera of the Dun Emer Industries and Cuala Industries, which included the Dun Emer and Cuala Presses, including book lists, advertisements for individual titles, cards, receipts, postcards, and brochures. Also included are newspaper and magazine clippings concerning the Dun Emer Industries, Jack and William Butler Yeats, AE, and Lord Dunsany. The Thomas Bird Mosher/Mosher Press material consists of twenty-eight letters from Thomas Bird Mosher to W. R. Wilde, written between 1898 and 1917, and six letters from Thomas Bird Mosher to Mary Hitchcock Wilde, written between 1917 and 1922, as well as two letters (1926 and 1938) from Flora M. Lamb, who continued the work of the Mosher Press after Mosher's death in 1923, to Mary Hitchcock Wilde. In this part of the collection there is also a Thomas Bird Mosher bookplate, a number of obituaries and appreciations of Mosher, a receipt from Thomas B. Mosher, Publisher, and a book list from 1902. Finally, there are some notes made by W. R. Wilde about the Mosher books in his collection and an advertisement for out-of-print Mosher books from a New York bookseller. The Pamela Colburn Smith material consists of one letter from Smith to W. R. Wilde, written in 1904, two hand-colored prints by Smith, two printed stories, one by Smith and one by Ella Young, both of which were illustrated by Smith, and two articles about her.

Roché, Henri Pierre, 1879-1959. Henri Pierre Roché Papers, 1886-1971.
Title:
Henri Pierre Roché Papers, 1886-1971.
The Henri Pierre Roché Papers consist of manuscripts, typescripts, notebooks, notes, clippings, correspondence, printed material, diaries, and financial and legal documentation. The papers were originally acquired from Henri Pierre Roché's widow, Denise Roché. Roché's works, both published and unpublished, are well represented in this group of papers. Material relating to the novels Jules et Jim and Deux anglaises et le continent is present and includes the correspondence and diaries of some of the individuals who later appeared as characters in the novels. For the most part, the correspondence in Series II is between Henri Pierre Roché and his two wives, Germaine Bonnard and Denise (Renard) Roché; however, other correspondents are also represented, such as Georges Braque, Jean Cocteau, Marcel Duchamp, Marie Laurencin, Pablo Picasso, Erik Satie, and Gertrude Stein. Series III contains Roché's daily agendas and diaries (referred to herein as "carnets"), which begin in 1901 and end in 1959, and document various aspects of his personal and professional life. Transcriptions of several carnets, through 1945, commissioned by film director François Truffaut, as well as a photocopy of one carnet, accompany the collection. Roché's interests in art, real estate, and his autobiography are well documented in the Personal and Legal Papers series. The last series contains materials relating to Roché's family. Journals, correspondence, works, financial, legal, and medical records, and printed material document the lives of Roché's mother Clara, his second wife, Denise, and his son Jean-Claude.

Fales Manuscript Collection, ca. 1700-2000
Title:
Fales Manuscript Collection ca. 1700-2000
The Fales Manuscript collection is made up of some 50,000 items, much of which was assembled by DeCoursey Fales from 1908-1966 and donated to NYU. The provenance of the materials is complicated, however. Following Fales' death in 1966, other collections and purchases were added into the Fales Manuscripts collection. We do not have a comprehensive listing of what Fales owned and what the library later purchased after his death. The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, drawings, photographs, realia, ephemera, and other materials primarily about English and American authors from 1700 to the present. There are special strenths in the Victorian, Edwardian, English 1890s, and Transition Period writers.

Lavin, Mary, 1912-1996. Mary Lavin papers, 1953-1964.
Title:
Mary Lavin papers, 1953-1964.
The Mary Lavin Papers are mostly manuscripts of about twenty of Lavin's short stories, mainly those collected in The Great Wave and Other Stories (1961) and In the Middle of the Fields (1969). In addition, there are fragments of (or notes on) essays written by Lavin on the short story, as well as a few letters concerning the return of manuscripts from magazines. Other than some fragments of "The Pastor of Six Mile Bush" and "A Gentle Soul" (composed earlier than 1951) on the reverse of later stories and a draft of "Catharsis" from 1953, nearly all of the manuscripts in the collection are dated 1958-1964. This large collection contains manuscripts of all but five of the stories from: The Great Wave and all but one, "The Mock Auction," from In the Middle of the Fields. There are multiple versions of most of the stories in the collection, many in Lavin's hand, including fifteen to twenty drafts each of a number of stories and more than thirty drafts of "A Lucky Pair," "The Cuckoo Spit" and "One Summer." The collection documents Lavin's lengthy composing process, showing how carefully each story is reworked before it is ready for publication. The more than forty drafts of "One Summer," for example, range from August 1962 to October 1965. Additional materials include letters and parts of manuscripts. Altogether there are eight letters dating from 1963 to 1977 as well as holograph fragments of drafts of her short story "The Cuckoo Spit," and her novel Mary O'Grady. The correspondence primarily concerns various publication discussions about her work. Correspondents include Denys Val Baker, The New Yorker, and Lord Dunsany. Lord Dunsany wrote eight letters to Lavin encouraging her writing and offering publishing advice. One file contains a forty-six page photocopy of Lavin's thesis, entitled "The Construction of the Novel and Jane Austen," completed in 1936 at the National University of Ireland.
