Lord Dunsany was an important twentieth century Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, poet, short story writer and essayist. He is renowned for his contributions to the fantasy and horror genres and has influenced a variety of writers, including H.P. Lovecraft and Ursula Le Guin. William Butler Yeats called Dunsany an authentic genius and compared his prose to "the subterranean music of goblins heard at twilight in a sequestered glade."

Patrick Mahony, a distinguished Irish-American journalist, author, playwright and humorist, shared an eleven-year friendship with Lord Dunsany. The two authors were collaborating by mail on a fantasy story at the time of Lord Dunsany's death.
