The collection contains correspondence of Hench with friends, colleagues, former students, and family, particularly his brother, Philip Showalter Hench, his daughter Margaret Hench Underwood, and Clarence Lewis Barnhart of the Thorndike Barnhart Comprehensive Desk Dictionary. The papers also include Hench's files from "Inside the ACD," a newsletter for which he edited the miscellany section; from "Words, words, words," a radio program he conducted; and from "What's the good word," a radio show he hosted. There are also papers from his year at New York University, 1951-1952, inscribed reprints and a scattering of notes on Old English, Middle English, and Chaucer. Also included are notes for a course at the University of Virginia Graduate School of Business Education taught by John Douglas Forbes, a reprint of his own article "Game" in Havelok 996, a portrait, and tapes from Community Conversations," a Charlottesville talk show on which he appeared. Of interest is a letter describing a 1941 visit to Egypt by Lord Dunsany.
