Lord Dunsany was an important twentieth century Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, poet, short story writer and essayist. He is renowned for his contributions to the fantasy and horror genres and has influenced a variety of writers, including H. P. Lovecraft and Ursula Le Guin. William Butler Yeats called Dunsany an authentic genius and compared his prose to "the subterranean music of goblins heard at twilight in a sequestered glade".

Willow Wray was Lord Dunsany's literary representative for several years. She amassed a complete set of his works, many volumes of which Dunsany signed, adding dedicatory verses in his own hand.
