Alabama. Dept. of Archives and History. Director. Administrative files, 1901-[Ongoing].
Title:
Administrative files, 1901-[Ongoing].
The Alabama Dept. of Archives and History collects and preserves records and artifacts that document the history of the state. The Director of the Ala. Dept. of Archives and History controls and directs the work of the Dept., serves as the chairman of the Local Government Records Commission and State Records Commission and is an ex-officio member of various state historical agencies and boards. Since its establishment in 1901 the programs and emphases at the Archives have shifted on numerous occasions. The administrative files of the Director reflect these changes. The series consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, and publications. The files contain information on department projects, department divisions, state agencies, associations, and organizations. The association files contain information on the director's involvement with state and local history societies and national archival organizations such as the Society of American Archivists, the Alabama Historical Association, and the American Library Association. The series contains the records of all of the Directors of the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History: Thomas M. Owen (1901-1920), Marie Bankhead Owen (1920-1955), Peter A. Brannon (1955-1967), Milo B. Howard (1967-1981), and Edwin C. Bridges who has served as Director since 1982. The records of Thomas M. Owen and Marie Bankhead Owen reflect the diverse activities of the director and the department before increased staffing and the establishment of separate agencies (i.e., Public Library Service) redefined many of these responsibilities. There is a large amount of personal correspondence, routine reference correspondence, and reference material interspersed in the records of the earlier directors. The files of Peter Brannon also include his records as the head of the Military Records Division. There is a small group of material that is too interfiled to be separated by director.

Title:
Records, 1787-1979.
Records, 1787-1979, of the Alabama Anthropological Society. The majority of the collection is centered around the early years of the group. There are a few original records, however, most of the collection is composed of pamphlets, clippings and other printed materials. The correspondence subgroup covers the founding years of the society. The main correspondents are Thomas Owen and Peter Brannon. Most of the letters are to various institutions about Alabama items in their collections. One letter worth noting is one from the Smithsonian Institution to Peter Brannon, giving advice on what to do with skeletal remains. The meetings and excursions records subgroup consists of handwritten notes on the group's meetings. It also contains narratives of some of the groups archaeological "excursions." Programs from a few of the society's annual meetings are also in this subgroup. The printing and publications subgroup includes an incomplete set of Arrow Points issues with a 1979 index, catalogs of three exhibitions of the group, and copies of the organization's handbook. The miscellaneous series consists of blank membership application forms, signs from exhibitions, and copies of Circular #1 of the society, giving basic information abou the group. The papers subgoup consists of papers given by members at the group's meetings. Topics covered include "Indian Mounds of Macon County, Ala.," "Some Notes on the Shell Banks of the Alabama Coast," "Coweta," "Ancient Copper Plates," and "Catherine Brown." The committee records subgroup is arranged by committee. The records from the Committee on Collections and Relics include notes on different collections in the Montgomery, Ala., area and a copy of one annual report of its activities. The records from the Committee on the Promotion of Anthropological Study in Alabama Schools include some drafts of its report to the society and the draft of a letter sent out to different educational institutions soliciting information about the anthropological programs that they offered. The majority of the series is comprised of different catalogs from universities around the country that had anthropology-related studies. The records of the Publicity Committee include a draft of one of its reports and a few press releases about the society. The final subgroup is composed of reference files on various anthropological subjects and clippings files that were intended to go into a scrapbook. Pamphlets and articles, some of which are very old, are included in this series. However, most of it is composed of clippings files from the early 1920s. The clippings are about Native Americans and their role in current events and history. The clippings are also concerned with archaeological discoveries in the news. These clippings are particularly interesting for the picture they present of racial attitudes in that time period.

Program administrative files, 1917-1919.
The Alabama Council of Defense was responsible for tracking and coordinating war time activity in the state. The program administrative files result from the council's activities and contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, reports, circulars, and lists. The files record the war time activities in both the white and African-American communities and cover a variety of topics ranging from retail deliveries to educating troops about venereal diseases. Some council activities recorded in this series include the tracking of Ala. soldiers who went AWOL from the U.S. military; a literacy program devoted to teaching drafted men how to read; a campaign for livestock conservation; and a movement for strict enforcement of vagrancy ordinances. Applications for non-war construction projects can be found in the files as well as job applications for the American Red Cross. In addition, the activities of all war relief agencies in the state are covered in the correspondence. Some council members whose correspondence is included in the files include W.C. Agee, Albert P. Bush, J.F. Dugger, Fred H. Gormley, Lloyd M. Hooper, George Lang, and Oscar Wells.

Public information subject files - State and county officials, 1819-1920.
The Alabama Dept. of Archives and History collects and preserves records and artifacts that document the history of the state. Prior to 1981 the department maintained numerous vertical files that were created by various divisions within the department. The subjects and content of these vertical files were determined by countless individuals employed by the department from ca. 1901 to 1981. This artificial series consists of an index to state and local officials who served between ca. 1819 and ca. 1920. The index was probably compiled by Thomas M. Owen, the department's first director. The 5 x 8-inch index cards contain the name of the individual, the position to which he was appointed, the date of the appointment or commission, and the source of the information. Appointments or commissions to the state militia are included.

Title:
Archibald Gracie papers, 1893-1916.
The Archibald Gracie papers, 1893-1916, chiefly consist of carbon copies of Archibald Gracie III's correspondence with members of Gracie's Brigade. The bulk of the correspondence dates from 1906 to 1909 and concerns Gen. Gracie and Gracie's Brigade. Most of the correspondence examines the battles of Chickamauga, Drewry's Bluff, and Petersburg and details the younger Gracie's search for members of his father's brigade. Some letters address Gen. Gracie's activities early in the war before his promotion to brigadier general, as well as his pre-Civil War career. Other letters describe the younger Gracie's efforts to establish a national military park at Petersburg. Because these letters frequently included information about Gracie's Brigade, they are found in the Gracie and Gracie's Brigade subgroup. This collection consists only of letters from Gracie, not the replies he received. The family history subgroup consists of copies of Gracie's letters to relatives and others regarding his genealogical research. The Owen-Manly correspondence subgroup contains a few letters written in 1916 from Thomas Owen, Director fo the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History, to R. F. Manly, who had been captain of Co. I, 59th Alabama Infantry Regiment. These letters discuss Owen and Manly's opinion of Gracie's book, The Truth about Chickamauga.

This collection of glass negatives contains 313 5 x 7 glass plates. The negatives on these plates vary in size from 1 x 2 through 5 x 7, and many plates contain 2 negatives. The majority of these negatives are images of portraits and prints of prominent Alabamians and historic sites to be used in Thomas M. Owen's History of Alabama and Dictionary of Alabama Biography. Of special interest are Peter Brannon's images of the Ala. Anthropological Society and images of various C.S.A. soldiers. Many of these images were not used and are therefore unidentifiable. These original prints belonged to Alabama families which were not a part of ADAH collections. A number of prints do belong to ADAH collections and if the print was published the page number will be noted in the container list. A number of the plates are in poor condition.

Title:
Administrative files, 1861-1905, and n.d.
The Ala. Hospitals in Richmond, Va., were established by an act of the Ala. legislature in 1861 Nov. to provide medical care for Ala. soldiers serving in the Army of the Potomac, later known as the Army of Northern Va. Juliet Opie Hopkins served as Matron and acting superintendent of the hospitals from 1861 to 1864. From 1864 to 1865 she was in charge of the military hospital at Camp Watts, Macon County, Ala. This series, consisting of administrative files from 1861 to 1865, documents Hopkins' day-to-day activities as a hospital administrator. Included are correspondence, letters, telegrams, broadsides, newspaper clippings, receipts, canceled checks, account books (bookkeeping), lists of hospital supplies and patients received by hospitals, a record of soldiers admitted into the hospitals, a record of soldiers who died in the hospitals, and a scrapbook. The letters contain information about supply requests for the hospital, articles received and donated, financial contributions, and the nurse volunteers. Primary correspondents include Ala. Governors A.B. Moore and John Gill Shorter, Col. William D. Chadwick, M.H. Sanborn, Confederate Secretary of War Leroy Pope Walker, and Gen. W.O. Hardee. The account books contain information on inventories of supplies and furnishings, invoices, and accounts with the State of Alabama. Of specific note is an account book of deceased soldiers that details how the money and personal effects of deceased soldiers were handled. The scrapbook is especially noteworthy. It contains a letter to General Joseph Wheeler from Thomas M. Owen, in 1905. There is also a copy of the 1861 act creating the hospital agency in Va. In the scrapbook there are numerous letters and other documents from prominent Confederate and Alabama leaders. Correspondents include Ala. Governors A.B. Moore, John Gill Shorter, and Thomas Hill Watts, Confederate officals, such as Leroy Pope Walker, William Lowndes Yancey, and C.G. Memminger; and military officers Evander M. Law, Levi W. Lawler, Edward A. O'Neal, Percy Walker, W.O. Hardee, N.H.R. Dawson, and J.J. Seibels. There are also a list of patients received on page 54, invoices, telegrams, clippings, and most notably a broadside from Selma dated 1861 September 4 discussing the establishment of a hospital in Richmond for Alabama soldiers

Alabama photographs collection-persons vertical file, [ca.1845- ].
The photographs collection-persons vertical file consists of gelatin silver prints, albumen prints, and copyprints of Alabamians ranging from the obscure to the prominent. Some items may be photographs of painted portraits or engravings. In addition, images of non-Alabamians who may have played a part in Alabama history, e.g., Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, are included. The persons vertical file contains extensive groups of photographs of such people as Marie Bankhead Owen, Joseph Wheeler, Thomas McAdory Owen, and the Bankhead family. A large number of Alabama Governors are represented. One of the weaknesses of this file is the fact that it does not contain many images of recent participants in Alabama history. The majority of the images are from the middle and late 1800's to the early 1900's. Previously, these photographs were included in a picture collection which contained images of people, places and subjects arranged alpha-numerically. In the previous collections items were not specifically identified at the item level and included images that were not photographs.
