Papers, 1861-1923.

This collection, 1861-1923, focuses on the literary works of Zitella Cocke. The majority of material included in this collection consists of handwritten manuscripts of poems, essays, and short stories. There are printed clippings and newspapers which include pieces of Zitella's work, as well as several hundred original manuscripts. Included in the collection are notebooks which include handwritten poems from other authors and several essays and poems written in French and German. The collection also includes two stories translated from the original German. There is some correspondence, most of which are from publishers and readers of Zitella Cocke's work. Among the publishers included in the correspondence are the Art Lithographic Publishing Company, Harper and Brothers, Youth's Companion, and Little Folks. There is also some correspondence between Zitella and Thomas and Marie Owen which contains a small amount of personal biographical information.

Zitella Cocke, author, teacher and musician was born on November 10, 1840, in Marion, Alabama, to a prominent family. Her father, Woodson St. George Cocke, was a planter and her mother, Mary Elizabeth (Binion) Cocke, was a Latin scholar, musician and linguist. Zitella was educated by her mother and private tutors before entering Judson Female Institute. She graduated Judson in 1856 with honors and traveled to Europe to study music.
