Public information subject files - Alabama place names, 1819-1920.

The Alabama Dept. of Archives and History collects and preserves records and artifacts that document the history of the state. Prior to 1981 the department maintained numerous vertical files that were created by various divisions within the department. The subjects and content of these vertical files were determined by countless individuals employed by the department from ca. 1901 to 1981. This artificial series consists of an index to Alabama place names that was probably compiled by Thomas M. Owen, the department's first director. The 5 x 8-inch index cards contain the place name (town, community, or post office) and a brief history or description. Some of the cards also cite the town's location and the source of the information. This index was compiled using Brewer's History of Alabama; the 1912 Post Office Guide; and the Report of the Alabama History Commission for Gatchoshet's Creek Names, Street's Cherokee Names, and Halbert's Crossing Places.
