Henry S. Halbert was born in Pickens County, Ala. From 1860 to 1861, he served as a soldier on the Texas frontier. When the southern states seceded from the Union, he joined the 6th Texas Cavalry where he served until the end of the war. From 1866 to 1888 he taught at Waco University in Texas and at other academic instituions in Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama.
