The Hopkins family lived in Huntsville and Mobile, Ala. and Richmond, Va. from 1816 to 1875, and in Md., Washington, D.C., Colo., and Montgomery, Ala. from 1875 to 1925. The family was active in antebellum politics in Ala. and played a prominent role in the establishment and administration of Confederate military hospitals. The following is a list of those individuals whose papers are contained in the Hopkins family collection: Arthur Francis Hopkins (1794-1865); Juliet Ann Opie Hopkins (1818-1890); and Juliet Opie Ayres (1863-1925).
