The letter is addressed to a unnamed woman who is one of the organizers of the exhibition Pérennité de l'art gaulois. He reminds her of the two works he has asked to be included in the exhibition catalog: the binding "à l'empreinte gauloise" by Lucienne Thalheimer, and a painting by André Bourdil. He is also sending a list of the works that should be fetched from his home [not enclosed].

The papers, the bulk of which date from the 1940s, include correspondence with editors, fellow writers and scholars, generally regarding Gómez-Correa's work, though there are letters from Jorge Cáceres describing the surrealist scene in Paris in 1948 and one from César Moro describing the South American literary scene in 1942. Spanning his entire career, these writings offer full elaboration of his notion of surrealism as permanent revolution. The collection also includes a few personal photographs; small books, excerpts from books, photocopied articles about surrealism and/or Gómez-Correa, and newspaper obituaries. Among the artwork are a photograph by Man Ray, two photomontages and one engraving by Braulio Arenas, a collage by Jorge Cáceres, an engraving by Hans Arp and a collaborative drawing by four fellow surrealists. Two-hundred and forty books, 62 serials, and 8 catalogs were transferred to the library.

Title:
Vivisimo muerto : Debates on surrealism in Latin America [videorecording] / [symposium sponsored by the Getty Research Institute].
This two-day symposium explores the history of surrealist ideas and practices in Latin America. Scholarly presentations and moderated discussions address topics including the relationship between surrealism and pre-Columbian art; the role of key figures such as Peruvian poet César Moro and Austrian painter and editor Wolfgang Paalen; and surrealism's continuing legacy in the work of postwar artists in Latin America. The symposium is part of the Surrealism in Latin America research project, which is inspired by the Getty Research Institute's broad and diverse Mexican and South American surrealist collections. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, journals such as Surréalisme (1924), Le Surréalisme au service de la révolution (1930-33), and Minotaure (1933-39) carried surrealist ideas about art, literature, and politics to Latin America. In addition, the transnational relocation of Europeans and Latin American (both before and during World War I) led to the growth of surrealist communities and networks in the cosmopolitan centers of Mexico and South America. As a result, Latin America became an important site for the development of surrealist ideas and the formation of challenges to André Breton's philosophy.

Valentine Hugo Papers, 1872-1968.
Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, journals, diaries, artwork, legal, financial and personal documents, photographs, printed material, and photocopies document the life of Valentine Hugo from 1872-1968. Included in the Works series are a number of drafts of articles and notes relating to friends of Valentine Hugo such as Constantin Brancusi, Paul Éluard, Raymond Radiguet, and Erik Satie. Also present are a number of manuscripts for radio broadcasts written in the 1950s and 1960s about her early artistic career and acquaintances. Correspondence with Valentine's mother Zélie Gross comprises almost two thirds of the Letters series and a substantial portion of the Recipient series. Other notable correspondents in the Recipient series include Marie Laure, Romola Nijinsky, and André de Badet. Most of the materials in the Other Papers series are Valentine's own personal papers, such as her passport and birth certificate, and works or correspondence by other authors. A large part of materials in this series involve Jean Hugo, Valentine's husband, and legal documents, personal documents, and works by Valentine's mother, Zélie Gross, or father, Auguste Gross.

Title:
Robert Valançay correspondence, 1920-1985 (bulk 1930-1949).
A collection of ca. 1600 letters received by Surrealist writer and translator Robert Valançay. Among the notable correspondents are Surrealist and Dada artists and poets: Jean Arp, Hans Bellmer, Andre Breton, Paul Eluard, Max Ernst, Raoul Hausmann, Richard Huelsenbeck, Georges Hugnet, Pierre de Massot, Ozenfant, Meret Oppenheim, Henri Parisot, Yves Poupard-Lieussou, Man Ray, Hans Richter, Yves Tanguy, and Jacques Villon. Letters from the poets Charles Théophile Féret, Charles Boulen, Fernand Fleuret and Napoléon Roinard are concerned with the promotion of Norman literature. More than 60 letters from Valançay's teacher Maurice Boucher provide information about Valançay's development as a translator. 12 letters from Valançay to various correspondents are part of the archive. Also included are: printed ephemera, ca. 50 photographs by members of the Surrealist group and various writings by Valançay. The writings document his work as a translator, including examples, and his work on Apollinaire.

Title:
Letter : Mexico D.F., to Pierre Mabille, Fort-de-France, [ca. 1940 - ca. 1945].
One page letter from Wolfgang Paalen in Mexico D.F. answering Pierre Mabille's letter sent from Fort-de-France (Martinique), where the latter had come from Paris after being banished from his medical and intellectual career by the Vichy government. Paalen explains how difficult it is to get entry visas for Mexico, which does not accept Europeans anymore. It would take a special permit signed by the prime minister in order to obtain visas for Mabille, André Breton and their wives. Paalen suggests that they first try Haïti or some South American port. He also cautiously informs Mabille that the country is still the best place left for living, but there is no intellectual life there. Post scriptum: "Censorship opened your letter".

Notes about André Breton, [not before 1947].
The manuscript comprises a series of thoughts headed by a quotation from Jean de Tinan about hypocrisy, "le vice le plus honteux de l'humanité." They briefly characterize the moral and intellectual defects of Hugnet's foe, André Breton, presumably meant to be used in some of his writings against Breton. One of them refers to a dated fact: "l'homme ne parvient jamais à sortir de ses dimensions. En 1947 vous avez donné la mesure des vôtres."
