Henry du Pont was born in 1812 at Eleutherian Mills near Wilmington, Delaware. He attended the Mount Airy Military School in Germantown, Pennsylvania, from 1823-1829 and then went to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, graduating in 1833. As a Second Lieutenant, he joined the 4th Artillery at Fort Monroe in Virginia. On July 15, 1837, he married Louisa Gerhard and together they had 9 children, including Henry Algernon, Victorine Foster, and Evelina. In 1846, he was appointed Adjutant General for the State of Delaware. From 1850-1889, Henry du Pont served as the head of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. In 1861, he was appointed Major-General, commanding Delawares volunteers; thereafter, he was known as The General. It is said that he, as much as anybody, kept Delaware on the Union side during the Civil War. Du Pont was active in Delaware politics, first as a Whig and then as a Republican. He also farmed and became the third owner of Winterthur, one of his familys estates. He died in 1889.
Henry du Pont was the second son of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont and senior partner of E.I du Pont de Nemours & Company from 1850 to 1889.

Henry du Pont (1812-1889) was the second son of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont. He was educated at Mt. Airy College, Germantown, Pa. and at the United States Military Academy at West Point (1829-33). Upon his graduation from West Point in 1833 he was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant in the Fourth Artillery. He served at Fort Monroe, Va., and at Fort Mitchell, Ala. when he resigned his commission at the request of his father and returned to Delaware to manage E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. In 1837 he and his brothers became partners in the firm. In 1850 he became the senior partner and director, continuing in this capacity until his death in 1889. Under his direction the company purchased mills on Big Wapwallopen Creek in Luzerne County, Pa., in 1859 in order to supply blasting powder for the nearby Wyoming and Hazleton coal fields. This was its first operation outside Delaware. In 1872 Henry du Pont with his nephew Lammot took a leading part in the formation of the Gunpowder Trade Association to control the powder companies that had sprung up during the Civil War. Under his leadership Du Pont first became a national organization.
Henry du Pont was active in Whig Party Politics in Delaware and in the state militia. He was an active supporter of Abraham Lincoln and served as presidential elector for Delaware.

Title:
Acquisitions of Pierre S. du Pont, 1438-1921.
The papers in this collection were acquired by Pierre S. du Pont by purchase or through gift. For some years before his death he was an active collector of Du Pont materials and bought several important bodies of manuscripts from French dealers. These papers are primarily concerned with Du Pont de Nemours, the Physiocrats, the French Revolution, and the antecedents of the Du Ponts and allied families in France. Of particular interest are letters from Jean Baptiste Colbert (1652), Gaspard de Coligny (1554), Jean Jacques Régis de Cambacérès (1795), and Comte Roger de Bussy-Rabutin (1675). Papers of Gabriel Denizot (1818) describe the establishment of the Du Pont Powder Company at Eleutherian Mills. Also included are miscellaneous papers of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont. Papers of Francis Gurney du Pont (1850-1904) contain notebooks on explosions at the gunpowder mills (1815-1902). Papers of Du Pont de Nemours include a copy of his essay on education in the United States entitled "Sur l'éducation nationale dans les Etats-Unis d'Amérique" n.d. This essay was written at the suggestion of Thomas Jefferson during the summer of 1800. It was sent to Jefferson for correction and translation, but this process was never completed.

Title:
The P. S. du Pont Office Collection, 1749-1939.
This collection was formed by the late Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) in connection with his study of company and family history. It contains elements which were selected from both company and family papers. The material was lodged in his Wilmington office for a number of years prior to his death in 1954. It was deposited with the Eleutherian Mills-Hagley Foundation, Inc., in 1954 and is recorded as Accession 501 in the records of the Hagley Museum Library. Particularly elements which were readily identifiable as company archives, especially certain business books, have been transferred to the records of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. (Series I). The remaining portion of the collection for which precise provenance could not be established, has been left intact; this residual portion is reported in this entry.

Papers, 1771-1922.
The personal correspondence relates to both personal and business matters. Prior to E. I. du Pont's arrival in America in 1800 it includes letters concerning the career of his father and brother. After 1800, much of it concerns the founding and operation of the powder mills on the Brandywine. There are references to French and American politics, as well as to Thomas Jefferson's criticism of Napoleon in 1812, and the visit of Lafayette to the United States in 1824. The papers of Madame du Pont consist for the most part of family correspondence.

Title:
Records, 1800-1905.
The nineteenth century records of the Du Pont Company are remarkably complete. They document the founding of the Company in Paris in 180l, its evolution into an American partnership during the early decades of the century, and its first incorporation in 1899. The records document the financial and business negotiations which led up to the founding of the company, the selection of a site for operations, the erection of mills, the intallation of machinery, methods of manufacture, production, and marketing. The records also describe the importation of saltpeter from India and sodium nitrate from Chile and shows how these raw materials were used in the production of black powder. Correspondence with Philadelphia labor agents show that Du Pont was heavily dependent on Irish labor. The collection contains a good deal of information about the Irish workers and describes the paternalistic relationship that evolved between the Du Pont family and the company's labor force.

Title:
William du Pont papers, 1863-1945 (bulk 1880-1928).
William du Pont's papers primarily encompass the years of his active business life from the early 1880s to his death in 1928, with a gap in his correspondence and invoices and receipts for the first decade of the 20th century. There are also some early personal correspondence, land purchasing agreements and papers pertaining to companies whose activities started before William du Pont involvement or lasted after his death. Family correspondence includes letters to and from his parents, sisters, daughter Marion and son William, second wife Annie Rogers du Pont and cousin Alfred I. du Pont. They discuss both family and business matters and are contained in Series I. Personal correspondence and Series II. General correspondence. Series I contains also 1892-1900 correspondence between William du Pont and his personal secretary in the United States, C.K. Lennig, which documents activities related to du Pont estate maintenance and businesses during the family's stay in England, including purchase of the "Montpelier" estate. Business-related correspondence of William du Pont collected in Series II. General correspondence reflects his major activities: involvement with powder and dynamite companies; investments in railroads, transportation, utilities and banking enterprises; membership in horse and cattle breeding societies and clubs, horse show organizations and hunting clubs; contacts with horse breeders and dealers; and construction, renovations and repairs at personal properties and business buildings. Materials of companies which William du Pont operated or invested in compose Series IV. Business papers. Papers of the du Pont high explosives enterprise Repauno Chemical Co. contain financial, technical and operational documents, Gunpowder Trade Association agreements and correspondence of the company first presidents Lammot du Pont (1880-1884) and William du Pont (1884-1892.) Another well-documented family business is U.S.F. Powder Company which papers (1919-1945) are probably the most comprehensive source of information on the development and manufacture of flashless powder by du Ponts. Records of the Hinckley Brake Co. and Miller Train Control Corporation, manufacturers of railroad car brake and stop control devices, contain patents for the devices with related correspondence, promotion and reference materials, minute books and bookkeeping records. The collection contains some papers of the Montpelier Supply Company which was organized in 1911 by William du Pont at his estate in Montpelier, Va. to resell general merchandise to the employees and farmers. Papers include minute book, store inventories, monthly farm payrolls and correspondence of William du Pont on financial and operational matters. Papers of William du Pont contain numerous enclosures. They include financial statements of many companies, prospectuses of banks and investment firms, more than 50 issues of informational leaflets of the Horse Association of America (1921-1927) and National Parks Association (1922-1923), catalogs and advertisements for agricultural products and domestic goods, horse and cattle show programs, photographs, blueprints and newspaper clippings. 17 photographs and 66 glass negatives of firing tests from papers of the U.S.F. Powder Co., together with other visual material from the collection have been transferred to the Pictorial Collections Department, Acc. 2007.205.

Title:
Papers, 1818-1892.
Sophie Du Pont's voluminous correspondence contains more than 20,000 letters to family and friends. More than 1,000 of these are to her husband, Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, and they were written while he was on extended sea duty in the Far East, Mediterranean, or on the Atlantic blockade. The letters describe Sophie Du Pont's domestic life at Louviers and contain observations about the social, cultural, and political events of the period in which she lived. These letters show that Sophie Du Pont had a certain ambivalence about the role of women in society as she consciously struggled to balance her intellectual interest which her domestic obligations particularly during her husband's long absences.

Papers relating to Du Pont Company affairs describe improvements in black powder manufacturing operations and technical innovations. There is also some correspondence relating to the Gunpowder Trade Association. Letters from Henry Belin, Jr. document the operation of the Du Pont powder agency in Scranton, Pa. Reports from Pinkerton's National Detective Agency contain reports by undercover agents who infiltrated a secret society of powder workers in 1891 that was protesting the fact that the Du Pont Company had begun to contract out some craft jobs. These reports document episodes of barnburning and other worker protest.

The papers cover a period of sixty years. As a woman of means, she was able to pursue her interests, which included education and literature. Outgoing letters (1803-1861) were written to her mother, siblings, nieces and nephews, and friends. The letters primarily discuss family matters, health, sewing, clothing, weather, and household administration, particulary the management of servants. The incoming letters (1798-1861) were written by family and friends. Letters from school friends document their interest in fashion, visits, courting, and literature. Of particular note are the exchanges with Antoinette Brevost, a member of a French refugee family who established a girl's school in Pittsburgh before going on to teach at Natchez.
