Eugene du Pont was the eldest son of Alexis I. du Pont and Joanna Smith du Pont and grandson of E. I. du Pont, the founder of the family gunpowder business. He joined the workforce of E.I du Pont de Nemours & Co. in 1861, became a partner in 1864, and senior partner in 1889. He became president upon incorporation of the firm in 1899, serving until his death three years later.

Eugene du Pont (1840-1902) was educated at the University of Pennsylvania. Upon the completion of his education in 1864 he became a junior partner at E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. In 1889 he became president of the Du Pont Company. He held this position until 1902. After his death T. Coleman, Pierre and Alfred I. du Pont took control of the company and transformed it into a modern corporation.
