The original accession of Vaux family papers contained in boxes 1-3 includes letters and documents from Jonathan Backhouse, Anthony Benezet, Thomas Clarkson, Stephen Grellet, Elias Hicks, Abel James, Rebecca Jones, Deborah Logan, James Logan, Margaret Morris, William Penn, William Robinson, Marmaduke Stevenson and others. Their topics include African Americans; Westtown School; the Quaker separation of 1827-28; Daniel Wheeler, Elizabeth Fry; a memorial for Anne Parrish (Female Society for Relief and Employment of the Poor); the Virginia Exiles (including the protest of the prisoners); manumission; early Quaker publishing; the will of Thomas Lloyd; Quakers and Native Americans; and women's property rights. The correspondence and documents relate to Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, including the Forrest Trust, Lewis Legacy for Poor Children, Richardson Trust, Josiah White Schools and the constituent meetings of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Western District, Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Northern District and Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Southern District, but also Quaker topics such as Quakers in Tortola and Barbados, Quakers in Charleston, S.C., the Bible Association of Friends in America, The Emlen Institution for the Benefit of Persons of African and Indian Descent, Friends Historical Society, and Haverford College. The graphics include glass slides of American travel views and Native American sites, and of Haverford College, especially those taken by George Vaux Jr., but also by William S. Vaux and M.M. Vaux, and photographs and other art media of Quakers and places with Quaker connections, such as Meetinghouses, burial grounds, Tortola and Barbados. Drinker, Elizabeth Sandwith, 1734-1807. Diaries, 1758-1807.
Title:
Diaries, 1758-1807.
An invalid for much of her life, she composed memorandum books for her own personal recollections, which constitute a day-by-day account of the life of a well-to-do Quaker woman. Elizabeth Drinker's interests were diverse but she was little concerned with political or economic questions, except insofar as they directly touched upon her family. The bulk of the entries deal with strictly private or family matters, particularly the health of her family. Her detailed accounts of illness and the treatment of illness in her family over a period of almost 50 years are a source for the study of the medical practices of the period. She gives particular consideration to the Yellow fever outbreaks in Philadelphia after 1793, especially the epidemics of 1793 and 1798. Elizabeth Drinker and her family were consciencious Quakers and there is material on the Society of Friends in Philadelphia. Of special note is the material on the American Revolution which includes detailed descriptions of the treatment of Quaker non-combatants, and of the British occupation of Philadelphia, principally during 1777.

The collection consists primarily of the papers of the Burd, Hubley, Patterson, Schall, and Shippen families. The principal authors are Edward Shippen, Sr., Edward Shippen, Jr., and Edward Burd. An additional, significantly represented correspondent is James B. Hubley. Historically prominent letter writers include: David Bacon, Owen Biddle, William Bradford, Benjamin Chew, George Clymer, Tench Coxe, John Dickinson, Josiah Dickinson, Henry Drinker, John Fothergill, Reuben Haines, Thomas Holme, Benjamin Levy, James Logan, Timothy Matlack, Thomas McKean, Anthony Morris, Israel Pemberton, John Penn, William Plumsted, David Rittenhouse, Benjamin Rush, Nicholas Scull, and Conrad Weiser. The collection as a whole provides an important view, especially of 18th- but also of 19th-century Philadelphia. The greatest emphasis of the collection is on legal matters within the range of cases appearing before the Pennsylvania courts: divorce, assault, trespassing, murder, theft, counterfeiting, burglary, and property. There are also personal financial accounts, which provide a picture of life in 18th-century Philadelphia for people of means.
