Hide Profile

Mrs. John M. (Fannie Geraldine Snell) Patterson, compiler of the scrapbook, was a daughter of Boulder County miner James Snell. She worked with the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper for a decade before transferring to the Fort Collins Express (per her wedding notice from the Denver Daily News on 2 December 1903, which contains photos of her and her husband). John Patterson, involved with mining operations in Gilpin County, Colorado, was a civil war veteran and Colorado pioneer.

John M. Patterson, born near Fairfield, Iowa, on 20 May 1846, died in Wellington, Colorado, on 5 May 1929. The son of pioneer settlers of southeastern Iowa, he lied about his age in order to enlist in the Iowa Volunteer Infantry, in which he was a drummer boy until 1864. He moved west, reaching Denver in the fall of 1865. He engaged in prospecting and mining until about 1903 when he moved to Boulder, where he married Fannnie G. Snell. They soon moved to Wellington, to stay.

John Patterson held a variety of civic offices in Wellington, Colorado, where he served on the town board, the fire department, and as justice of the peace.
