The American Colonization Society was founded in 1817 in Washington, D.C. for the purpose of transporting freeborn and emancipated American blacks to Africa and helping them start a new life there.

The American Colonization Society was established in 1817 and was originally named the American Society for Colonizing the Free People of Colour of the United States. The Society supported the idea of helping free African Americans settle in Africa so as to enjoy greater freedoms.

The Reverend Charles Henry Hall (1820-1895) was rector of the Holy Trinity Church, located at Clinton and Montague Streets in Brooklyn, N.Y., from January 1869 until his death. On January 11, 1887, he led the funeral service of his friend and prominent Brooklyn clergyman Henry Ward Beecher.
