George Palmer Putnam was an innovative American publisher. He distinguished himself as a teen-aged apprentice, and was made partner in several firms before founding his own house, G.P. Putnam's. Among his many contributions to American letters, he published and promoted works by Irving, Cooper, Hawthorne, Poe, and many others; opened a London branch, becoming the first American publisher to do so; and published Putnam's Monthly Magazine, which set a new standard for American literary journalism. He also played a leading part in establishing the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
