Charles Carroll Everett (1829-1900) graduated from Bowdoin College in 1850 and Harvard Divinity School in 1859. He taught modern languages at Bowdoin from 1853 to 1857. Following his graduation from Harvard Divinity School, he served as the pastor of the Independent Congregational (Unitarian) Church in Bangor, Maine, from 1859 to 1869. He then accepted the Bussey Professorship of Theology at Harvard Divinity School, a position he held from 1869 to 1878. In 1878, Harvard President Charles Eliot appointed him as the Dean of Harvard Divinity School, a position he held until 1900. He was one of the founders of the theological journal New World, and his publications included The Science of Thought (1869), Religions Before Christianity (1883), Fichte's Science of Knowledge (1884), Essays on Poetry, Comedy and Duty (1888), Ethics for Young People (1891), and The Gospel of Paul (1893).

The son of Charles Everett, Sr. of Quincy, Illinois, and the cousin of Edward Everett (1818-1903), who served as a sergeant during the Mexican War, Charles Everett also fought in the Mexican War as a lieutenant.
He engaged in a number of battles, including those at Camargo and Monterrey, Mexico.
