Colonial Governor of Massachusetts. Shirley was active in colonial politics, served in the French and Indian War, and succeeded Braddock as commander of all British Forces in North America upon Braddock's death. Shirley attended a council of war in New York, N.Y. with Pensslyvania Governor Robert Hunter Morris to discuss an attack on Fort Frontenac, Oswego, and the St. Lawrence River region.
