Biographical notes:
Adolphus Washington Greely was born in Massachusetts in 1844. He served throughout the American Civil War and remained in the army at its close. In 1881 he was appointed to lead the United States International Polar Year Expedition, 1881-1884 to Ellesmere Island. He retired from the Army in 1908 and died in Washington in 1935
