Biographical notes:

Adolphus Washington Greely was born in Massachusetts in 1844. He served throughout the American Civil War and remained in the army at its close. In 1881 he was appointed to lead the United States International Polar Year Expedition, 1881-1884 to Ellesmere Island. He retired from the Army in 1908 and died in Washington in 1935

General Adolphus Washington Geely was born March 27, 1844, in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He was a soldier, explorer, scientist and author. In 1881, Greely served as the commander of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition. Later, he headed the U.S. Weather Service and supervised construction of 3,900 miles of telegraph line and ocean cable in Alaska that established the first successful long-distance wireless from Nome to St. Michael. Fort Greely and Greely Point, Alaska are both named for him. He died October 20, 1935, in Washington, D.C.
