John Jackson Sparkman (b. Dec. 20, 1899, Morgan County, Ala.-d. Nov. 16, 1985, Huntsville, Ala.), U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator from Alabama, was a member of the Students Army Training Corps during World War I and later graduated from the University of Alabama law school. He was elected as a Democrat to the 75th Congress, serving from 1937 to 1946, and to the Senate, serving from 1946 to 1979. Senator Sparkman was chairman and co-chair of a number of key committees, including the Committee on Banking and Currency and the Committee on Foreign Relations. He was an unsuccessful Democratic nominee for vice president in 1952.
