Two letters from John Houstoun to Benjamin Lincoln and John Jay discuss military matters and the capture of Savannah in 1779. This collection consists of a microfilm copy of the Georgia State papers, 1775-1788 from the National Archives and Records Administration's collection "Papers of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789." The papers contain letters from the state of Georgia to the Continental Congress and include such subjects as Native American wars in the interior of Georgia, the arrest and confinement of George McIntosh on the charge of selling rice to the British in East Florida, the unsuccessful expedition against East Florida led by Button Gwinnett, Gwinnett's death in a duel with General Lachlan McIntosh, the planning and execution of subsequent military actions against East Florida, the need for constructing two galleys to defend the harbors and rivers of Georgia, the recruitment of foot soldiers and cavalry troops, reports of disaffection among inhabitants of the state, and warfare and negotiations with the Creek Indians. Also included are memorials and petitions from the inhabitants of certain countries urging the removal of General George McIntosh from the state. Among the enclosures are resolutions of the state assembly, copies of letters from General Robert Howe and form the widow of Button Gwinnett, and an intercepted letter from the British Governor Tonyn of East Florida to Lord George Germain, British Secretary of State of the Colonies. Roll 1 contains correspondence from Georgia to the Continental Congress, 1775-1788. An inventory of letters appears at the start of the roll and shows the date of the letter, when it was read, and the subject of the letter. Roll 2 contains Official letters received by the President of the Continental Congress from various officials in Georgia, including Button Gwinnett; John A. Treutlen; John Houstoun; George Walton Lyman Hall; Samuel Elbert; Edward Telfair; George Mathews; and George Handley. These letters are arranged in chronological order. The materials on roll 1 were microfilmed by the National Archives and Records Administration in 1959; the materials on roll 2 were microfilmed by the Library of Congress for Lilla M. Hawes in 1949.

In this letter, George Walton asks on behalf of himself, Joseph Pannel, Robert Walton, and Samuel Scott permission of the "Honorable President of the Convention" that he might recruit 300 men from the inhabitants of the colony of Virginia to armed service in Georgia. Below this letter is a note dated 6 June 1776 from the Convention stating that a Mr. Drayton and a Mr. Elliot of South Carolina will also be allowed to recruit in Virginia.

This collection consists of letters written by George Walton, a letter written to George Walton, and an incomplete biographical sketch. Included is a letter from Walton to Robert Morris, 1778, in which Walton tells Morris he cannot follow his advice and quit public office. He congratulates Morris upon the capture of British warships and inquires after Morris' wife and family. The second item in the collection consists of an envelope addressed to David Zubly and Joseph Nicholson, 1785, that includes a note that it is to be opened at the examination of William Moss. The third letter is written from James M. Simmons to Walton, 1789. In the letter, which includes an enclosure, Simmons writes that the enclosed is a determination of the Board of Trustees of Richmond Academy for consideration by the state legislature in Augusta. The enclosure is an extract from the proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Trustees of Richmond Academy requesting that, the church being completed, the governor appoint a day for St. Pauls Parish to choose vestrymen in order that a clergyman may be appointed and church worship regulated. The last letter recommends James Kidd for reappointment as tobacco cooper. Also included in the collection is a biographical sketch of George Walton prepared for Sanderson's Lives of the Signers, IV, 151; the first four pages are missing.

The collection consists of sworn testimony of Thomas Kirton, signed by George Walton, who asserted "...That...he contracted with George Davidson...to recover for the deponent two hundred and fifty-three dollars in the island of Jamaica for which he said George Davidson received a bond or obligation...and the deponent further saith that upon the arrival of...Davidson...he has applied to and demanded from him the said returns on obligations...but that ...Davidson had refused...."

Miscellaneous papers including a treatise, 1781, advocating close ties between the northern colonies and South Carolina and Georgia, then under British control, and emphasizing the strategic and economic importance of the southern colonies to an independent American confederation. Also, an application, 1782, from Walton, Button Gwinnett, and Lyman Hall to the Georgia legislature for permission to import slaves from East Florida; and letters concerning William Few, Jr.'s service in the Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention. Also includes two letters, 1789, from George Washington concerning the federal treasury, the census, and a national day of thanksgiving; letter, 1790, from Thomas Jefferson concerning the census, naturalization laws, and the appropriation of government funds; document, 1800, appointing Nicholas Ware the guardian of a free black woman and her three children in order to protect their free status; petitions concerning the settlement of estates; and legal papers pertaining to the payment of debts.

The collection consists of one document of agreement between John Morel, Robert Watts, and Edward Telfair concerning the cutting and delivery of "a full and sufficient quantity of live oak... intended for building a ship"... to "the island of Ossabaw." The agreement is signed by George Walton who, in 1774, was engaged in a prosperous law practice in Savannah, Georgia. Later Walton was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a Georgian governor.
