Elizabeth Fuller Chapman papers and films 1932-1976
Elizabeth Fuller Chapman papers and films, 1932-1976
Title:
Elizabeth Fuller Chapman papers and films 1932-1976
The papers and films document the friendships between Elizabeth Fuller Chapman (1893-1980) and several writers and artists, most notably Alice B. Toklas, Gertrude Stein and Thornton Wilder. Letters in Box 1 date from 1932-1976. Printed material in Box 1 includes theater programs, clippings on Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, and interview notes and transcripts from the filming of the 1970 documentary by Perry Miller Adato, "Gertrude Stein: When You See, Remember Me." The films in Box 2 are three reels of black and white 16mm motion picture film, duplicates made in 1982 of the original 16mm footage. One film, titled "Winter Parties," contains footage of parties at Chapman's home in Chicago between 1934 and 1935, and includes a scene from a 1934 holiday party with Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, and Thornton Wilder. The other two films, titled "Lectures," were made by Chapman during trips to Paris between 1934 and 1938. The films were used during Chapman's lectures. Scenes feature notable artists, writers, dancers, philosophers, and gallerists, including: Pedro Pruna, Constantin Brancusi, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Pablo Picasso, Colette, Thornton Wilder, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Marcel Duchamp, Igor Stravinsky, Nicolas Nabokov, Francis Poulenc, Salvador and Gala Dali, André Derain, Chick Austin, Christian Berard, Leonide Massine, Bernard Faÿ, Mary Garden, Louis Marcoussis, and Edouard Vuillard.

Title:
Jascha Heifetz Collection 1802-1987 (bulk 1911-1974)
The collection includes Heifetz's personal music library of original compositions, arrangements, and transcriptions (some of which are unpublished), his annotated parts and scores, holographs and manuscripts of many of his contemporaries, and hundreds of printed scores. Concert programs document his performances from 1911 to 1974, and photographs, photo albums, and scrapbooks, encompassing the violinist's entire life. The correspondence, constituting a small part of the collection, contains letters from such important musical figures of the 20th century as Leopold Auer, Benjamin Britten, Sergei Prokofiev, George Bernard Shaw, and Sir William Walton; correspondence from Heifetz is also housed in other Music Division collections.

Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

Title:
Alice Esty papers, 1600-1999, n.d.
The papers of soprano Alice Esty include original and photo-reproduced manuscripts of unpublished musical compositions for solo voice and piano by several major composers of the twentieth century, including Francis Poulenc, Virgil Thomson, Ned Rorem, Darius Milhaud, Germaine Tailleferre, Paul Bowles, Claire Mann, Henri Sauguet, and Ben Weber. Many of these compositions represent collaborative efforts between musicians and poets, including Frank O'Hara, Kenneth Koch, e.e. cummings, and Guillaume Apollinaire, and some include Esty's performance annotations. Related correspondence is also included, as are letters with close friends and other composers such as William Matthews, Arthur Gold and Robert Fizdale. Also included are the transcripts of Thomas Parkman Cushing's letters and diaries, the originals of which are presumed lost. Cushing (1787-1854), an affluent and important shipping merchant in Boston during the mid-nineteenth century, was the founder of Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Massachusetts.

Frederick R. Koch collection, 1640-1983.
The Frederick R. Koch Collection consists of musical, literary, and historical materials collected by Frederick R. Koch, principally through purchases at public auctions, 1979-1986. Including individual items, concentrations of related materials, and several extensive archives, the collection is a broad and deep resource for study of the lives and works of a range of composers, authors, and other historical figures. Most materials are music manuscripts, literary manuscripts, drawings, and correspondence of European, English, and American composers, authors, and artists. Also present are historical manuscripts, photographs, albums, and other papers. While the contents of the collection span the seventeenth to twentieth centuries, most date from the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, with particular strengths in French, Italian, German, and British music, French literature, and British art.

Poulenc introduces his friend Jacques Delore, who is in London, and asks Aubry to tell Delore about concerts and to introduce him to musicians. He discusses his compositional projects (a quadrille and suite for piano, and "a marvellous thing" that is in the works), his musical interests (requesting that Mr. Kling give him some new items of Stravinsky, Falla and Berner[s?], since he cannot afford to buy them), and works by colleagues (praises a recent Fox-trott by Auric and Le printemps au fond de la mer, a vocal work by Durey set to a poem by Cocteau to be performed by Vladimir Golschmann on the 31st)
