E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. Advertising Dept. Cellophane Division records, 1924-1949.
Title:
Cellophane Division records, 1924-1949.
This series contains bulletins that were distributed to Du Pont's cellophane salesmen. The Cellophane Division of the Rayon Dept. became the Film Dept. in 1950, and later cellophane advertising can be found in that series. The bulletins discuss sales strategies, new products and customers, prices, and general procedures. The bulletins promote the use of cellophane for adhesive tape, but primarily as packaging. Consumer surveys and studies rate the appeal of cellophane packaging for a variety of products. Attached to many of the bulletins were cellophane advertisements and samples. The advertisements have been flattened and boxed separately, and the samples transferred to the artifact collections of the Hagley Museum. During World War II, series of bulletins like "Army-Navy Packaging News" and "Lend-Lease Information" promoted the use of cellophane to wrap army rations and first-aid materials.

Hanford, William E., 1908-1996. Oral history interview with William E. Hanford 1995 March 15
Title:
Oral history interview with William E. Hanford 1995 March 15
William Hanford begins the interview with a discussion of the importance of teamwork and the influence of Roger Adams in his career. He then continues on to his family background and youth. His high school chemistry teacher and his uncle both encouraged his interest in the sciences. After graduating from Bristol High School, he attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, where he earned a B.S. in chemistry in 1930. Hanford then took a position as an analytical chemist at Rohm and Haas, but soon decided to attend graduate school. He accepted an offer from the University of Illinois, and studied with Roger Adams. He worked on various problems in the laboratory, and got to know many members of the department, including Carl Marvel, Reynold Fuson, and Ralph Shriner. After earning his Ph.D. in 1935, he took a job with DuPont, working in Experimental Station. He worked on producing isothiocyanate and polymerizing caprolactam. Hanford was also involved with Teflon, polyamides, and polyesters. In 1942, he moved to GAF, where he worked on Glim, the first liquid detergent. Hanford then moved to M.W. Kellogg Company in 1946. He helped to develop KEL-F and sold it to 3M before moving again to Olin Corporation in 1957. At Olin, he worked on Head and Shoulders, carpet backing, and plastic shotgun shells, among other products. Hanford concludes the interview with a discussion of teamwork, his family, his experience with urethane, and his induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame

Title:
Records, 1903-1991 (bulk 1950-1982).
This group of Executive Committee records is extremely fragmentary. They were received in three lots, each representing a culling from the complete file. The first lot contained files of historical interest from the 1903-1921 period in which the company assumed its modern shape. The second lot was limited to only a few subjects, primarily dossiers for patent and licensing agreements (1950-1972), for capital improvements (1972), and departmental annual reports (1981-1982). The third lot consists of committee files copies by David A. Hounshell and John K. Smith for their book, "Science and Corporatate Strategy".
