Charles Babbage was a mathematician and inventor.
Elias Loomis was an astronomer, meteorologist, teacher, and author of scientific and mathematical texts. He taught at Western Reserve College, New York University, and Yale University. Loomis was also a genealogist and produced a massive compendium of information on the Joseph Loomis family.

The collection contains notebooks kept by six NYU students, Charles Ludlum, Ezekiel Deyo Van Dyck, James Morton Paton, William Frank Burroughs, John Henry MacCracken, and Elbert William Brown. They contain notes on lectures given between 1860 and 1897; subjects covered include algebra; botany; chemistry; geology; Greek language, literature, and archeology; English literature; rhetoric; religion; physiology; physics, including pneumatics, acoustics, heat, magnetism, and optics; philosophy; and church history. Instructors include Henry Martin Baird, George Washington Coakley, Henry Draper, John C. Draper, Albert H. Gallatin, Elias Loomis, Henry Mitchell MacCracken, Benjamin N. Martin, and John J. Stevenson. The collection also contains a journal by George Hendric Houghton, 1839-1850, with a collection of orations and poetry; a diary kept by John Torrey while travelling in Europe in 1833, with accompanying material dated 1938; and a journal dated 1886, containing sermons written by Howard Crosby.

Papers of three related families: the Johnson and Gibbs families of New Haven, Connecticut, and the Van Cleve family of New Jersey. The principal figure is Ebenezer Alfred Johnson, professor of Greek and Latin Literature at the University of the City of New York (1839-1891). His papers consist of personal and professional correspondence and a small amount of printed matter and records relating to the University of the City of New York.Included in his personal correspondence are letters from Josiah W. Gibbs, his nephew, a lengthy series of courtship letters with Margaret Fox Van Cleve, whom he married in 1842, and additional letters on the birth of their children (1843-1849). Two friends who figure in the personal correspondence are Thomas A. Thacher and Louis Janin. Among his notable professional correspondents are: Ethan Allen Andrews, Theodore Frelinghuysen, Isaac Ferris, Elias Loomis, Taylor Lewis, and George S. Parker. On matters concerning Yale University, he corresponded with George E. Day, Edward C. Herrick, and James Luce Kingsley. The major part of the collection is made up of correspondence among various branches of the family and contains the letters of Johnson's two wives and his children with intimate details of family life and relationships in the 19th century. Three members of the family who travelled to Europe (1866-1869) recorded their impressions in family letters. There is also a series of letters from Europe (1877-1879) by Alfred V. C. Johnson.

Correspondence, memoranda, notes, and drawings record Herrick's work in astonomy and entomology, particularly his observations on the Aurora Borealis and the Hessian fly. Prominent scientists among his correspondents include Louis Agassiz, James D. Dana, Thaddeus William Harris, Elias Loomis, Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet, William C. Redfield, Samuel H. Scudder, Benjamin Silliman, Benjamin Silliman Jr., and William Tully. His career as librarian of Yale College (1843-1858) is reflected in catalogues, invoices, and memoranda relating to book purchases for the library. Between 1847 and 1862 he also supervised the publication of the triennial catalogues for Yale College and memoranda concerning these are also in the papers. His financial and legal files contain both personal records and account books (1835-1844) for the booksellers' firm of Herrick and Noyes, of which he was a partner. Also included are papers relating to New Haven including minutes of committee meetings, reports and correspondence on the Bicentennial (1838).
