Maddry of Chapel Hill, N.C., was a Baptist minister and executive secretary of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, 1933-1945.
Charles Edward Maddry was born in Chapel Hill in 1876, the son of W.A. and Julia R. Sugg Maddry, and grew up in Hillsborough, North Carolina. He married Emma Parker (1881-1973) of Hillsborough in 1909.
Maddry attended the University of North Carolina from 1898 to 1903, during which time he served as minister of the First Baptist Church in Hillsborough. In 1892, he was superintendent of the Orange County public schools. Maddry continued his studies at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and afterwards had pastorates in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Texas. From 1933 to 1945, he served as executive secretary of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Maddry wrote two books on missionary work: Day Dawn in Yoruba Land (1939), about mission work in Nigeria; and Christ's Expendables (1949), a collection of case histories of missionaries.
He received many honorary degrees and awards and was a popular speaker at university commencement exercises. Maddry died in 1962.

Katharine Parker Freeman Memoir (#4988-z) 1975-1983
Title:
Katharine Parker Freeman Memoir (#4988-z) 1975-1983
Katharine Parker Freeman, a native of Goldsboro, N.C., received B.A. degrees from Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., and Simmons College in Boston, Mass.; taught at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C., the University of Puerto Rico, and Meredith; married L. E. M. Freeman, pastor and professor of religion at Meredith; raised five sons; was an active member of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church; and worked to improve race relations. The memoir of Katharine Parker Freeman was written mostly in 1975, with some additions in the early 1980s. In it, Freeman recounted memories of her family; education; religious life; teaching career, including planning a home economics department at Meredith College; and daily life, chiefly in Raleigh, N.C., but also in Hillsborough, N.C., Boston, and Puerto Rico. In addition to family life, recurring themes include churches, ministers, Freeman's religious questioning, her study of music, and playing piano and organ for various churches and Sunday schools. She also discussed the interracial group that met at the Freeman's house and joined in other social occasions, ca. 1943-1960, and the Freemans' participation in activities sponsored by the Fellowship of Southern Churchmen. In addition to Freeman's children, people important in the memoir are her father Thomas Bradley Parker, L. E. M. Freeman, Delia Dixon-Carroll, Charles Maddry, McNeill Poteat, and Robert Seymour. Also included are photocopies of pictures of Katharine Parker Freeman and members of her family.

Title:
S.L. Morgan papers, 1895-1970 [manuscript].
The collection includes correspondence and writings of Samuel Lewis Morgan. The correspondence consists chiefly of copies of Morgan's letters to friends, family members, Baptist ministers, editors, and readers of his writings, written during the 1950s and 1960s when Morgan was in his eighties and nineties. Most letters are of a personal nature, relating to Morgan's family, his ministerial activities, and his reading and writings. Scattered letters to businessmen, senators, and presidents concern requests for information, reponses to published articles, and calls for action on various social issues from "immoral movie houses" in the 1920s to civil rights in the 1960s. Major correspondents include William Louis Poteat, John Morgan, James I. Miller, William W. Finlator, Edwin McNeill Poteat, Jr., Willis Richard Cullom, John W. Kincheloe, Charles E. Maddry, J. Marse Grant, Samuel Talmadge Ragan, Charles Bennett Deane, Thomas J. Lassiter, Jr., Eugene Norfleet Gardner, Hubert P. Warden, Rexford Squires, and LaReine Warden Clayton. Most of the remaining papers are writings of some type, including a fifty-year, twenty-five-hundred-page "journalistic" diary, nearly two thousand clippings of articles, several hundred sermons and other addresses, and other items. The topics of Morgan's writings include pastoral ministry, Scripture, Baptist doctrine, women's roles, death and dying, stories of inspiration, and men and women whom Morgan had known and admired.
