Audrey Beck Papers
Title:
Audrey Beck Papers
The collection chronicles the eighteen year political career of Audrey Beck focusing on her terms as State representative (1969-1975) and State Senator (1975-1983). The collection includes materials on Beck's campaigns, her House and Senate terms, committees on which she sat, issues with which she was particularly involved (women's issues, education and tax reform) as well as material on her career prior to entering politics. Included are correspondence, legislative documents, clippings, memoranda, photographs, reports, publications, speeches and related materials. Although she began her career as a district representative for Mansfield, CT, the significant portions of the collection are those that document her senatorial years in the Connecticut General Assembly. The Beck Papers also serve as a companion collection to the Papers of Chase Going Woodhouse (various positions in public service, 1925-1980) and Dorothy Goodwin (54th District, 1974-1984), colleagues of Beck. The three collections together present a fairly complete picture of a generation of women in the Connecticut legislature.

Title:
Wisconsin Democratic Party Oral History Project interviews, 1982-1986.
Interviews with 37 former and current activists in the Democratic Party of Wisconsin concentrating particularly on the Party's building period between the end of World War II and the electoral successes in the late 1950s. Interviewees include former Progressives, former Socialists, pre-1945 Democrats, activists in farm and labor organizations, successful and unsuccessful candidates for office, local party workers, and party chairmen. Because so much of the party's leadership came from Dane and Milwaukee counties, interviewees come disproportionately from these areas. Each interview is accompanied by an abstract providing information on the contents and the tape location where topics are covered. Also present is one box of research materials. The interviews were conducted by Catherine Coberly and Jim Cavanaugh for the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Interviewees are Gehrta Amlie, Bruno Bitker, Julia Bogholt, Laurie Carlson, James and Ruth Doyle, John and William Duffy, Thomas Fairchild, Gerald Flynn, Virginia and Henry Hart, Esther Kaplan, Esther and John Lawton, Virginia Lehman, Erich Lenz, Robert Lewis, Patrick J. Lucey, Henry Maier, Lucile Miller, John Moses, Philleo Nash, Gaylord Nelson, Frank Nikolay, Gretchen Pfankuchen, William Proxmire, David Rabinovitz, Henry Reuss, John Reynolds, Warren Sawall, Gloria and Milton Schneider, Carl Thompson, Mari Jo and Walter Henry Uphoff, and Floyd Wheeler.

Shapiro, Irving S., 1916-2001. Irving S. Shapiro papers, 1964-1981
Title:
Irving S. Shapiro papers, 1964-1981
The surviving papers of Irving S. Shapiro are a small fragment. Only six file titles are represented, all dealing with the ceremonial aspects of his role as Du Pont CEO. The first file consists entirely of letters of congratulation written to Shapiro on the occasions of his several promotions. The second file concerns Shapiro's activities in opposing the attempt by Arab nations to enforce a boycott of companies doing business with the State of Israel. The file includes letters, minutes and reports generated by this effort, along with the speeches of prominent legislators and cabinet officers in support of various anti-boycott bills. The third file documents Shapiro's handling of the merger of Christiana Securities Company into Du Pont. It includes reports by leading investment bankers engaged to compute an equitable exchange ratio for the two firms' stock and a 996-page transcript of the merger hearings before the Securities & Exchange Commission. The fourth file contains newsclippings and magazine articles dealing with Shapiro's activities and with the evolution of Du Pont under his management. It includes transcripts of two oral history interviews with Shapiro, one for the American Jewish Committee and one by Morgan, Stanley & Co. The fifth file deals with Shapiro's appearance on the Donahue show in 1980 and consists primarily of letters from viewers along with Shapiro's replies. The sixth file deals with the Du Pont Company's response to the book "The Company State" prepared by Ralph Nader's staff. The file contains position papers and background reports collected for use in answering queries from stockholders, citizens and the press and in countering Nader's charges.

Title:
Ad Hoc Committee on the Human Rights and Genocide Treaties Records Bulk, 1960-1979 1943-1984
The Ad Committee on the Human Rights and Genocide Treaties was organized in the spring of 1964 by some 35 national voluntary organizations for the purpose of encouraging the United States government to commit itself, through ratification of four United Nations conventions (dealing with Genocide, Slavery, Forced Labor and the Political Rights of Women), to the building and strengthening of a body of international law in the field of human rights. The first such measure, concerned with the basic, inviolable right to life itself, was the Genocide Convention. Developed in the highly charged atmosphere of the years immediately following the Holocaust, it was adopted unanimously by the UN General Assembly in 1948 and signed, but never ratified, by the United States. The Committee’s task was to overcome legislators’ resistance to ratification, through direct lobbying, publicity campaigns and outreach to sympathetic sectors of the U.S. population. Under the leadership of its Executive Secretary, Betty Kaye Taylor (a long-time staff member of the Jewish Labor Committee) the Committee mobilized labor, civil rights, civil liberties, religious and fraternal organizations, and achieved a steadily growing body of support from Democratic and liberal Republican senators. But Congressional opposition and public indifference proved intransigent. The campaign was to last much longer, and was strewn with more bitter disappointments, than the organizers of the Committee could have imagined; ratification was finally achieved in 1986. The collection includes administrative records, publicity materials, reports, clippings, articles, and extensive correspondence with prominent supporters of ratification. NOTE: This collection is housed offsite and advance notice is required for use.

Records of the Department of Veterans Affairs. 1773 - 2007. News Clippings
Title:
Records of the Department of Veterans Affairs. 1773 - 2007. News Clippings
This series consists of records from the Veterans Administration's (VA) Information Service, which reflects its work in monitoring local and national newspapers for articles (both positive and negative) about the VA and veterans-related issues or events as well as news stories about specific veterans or by specific writers, columnists, or journalists. The files also document the VA's public relations efforts as it responded to and dealt with these articles. The materials are mainly comprised of newspaper clippings, correspondence, and memorandums. Other types of records include press releases, speeches, and some photographs. There are also several reports from the General Accounting Office (GAO) which look at various VA policies and procedures. The records deal mostly with veterans' medical care at VA hospitals and other veterans' benefits, such as financial aid for education (i.e., the GI Bill), military pensions, insurance, and assistance with securing loans. Also included are files concerning veterans returning from the Vietnam War and their efforts to readjust to civilian society. There are also materials focusing on the purchase and distribution of drugs and medicine at VA hospitals as well as drug abuse by veterans. Files containing articles and newspaper clippings about specific veterans include three noteworthy ones: Lt. Colonel Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, World War II flying ace of the famed Black Sheep Squadron; Sergeant Alvin C. York, Medal of Honor recipient from World War I; and Major Claude Eatherly, pilot of the B-29 bomber "Straight Flush" that flew over Hiroshima, Japan ahead of the "Enola Gay." The Information Service also collected materials regarding critical comments made by Senator William Proxmire of Wisconsin about VA practices.

Title:
Gaylord Nelson papers, 1954-2006 (bulk 1963-1980)
Papers, mainly 1963-1980, of former Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, founder of Earth Day and Counselor of the Wilderness Society. His papers document his Senatorial career and his post-Senatorial activities, including his initial election to Congress and his subsequent re-election campaigns, legislative achievements and activities, relationships with other politicians and residents of his home state, the administration of his office and staff, personal and official finances, activities and interests in the environment after 1981, as the Counselor of the Wilderness Society; and the 20th and 25th anniversaries of Earth Day. Most importantly, the Gaylord Nelson collection documents Nelson's involvement in the origins of Earth Day and legislation related to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore; the St. Croix, Wolf, and Namekagon Rivers; Alaska Pipeline; Supersonic Transport (SST); environmental education; Mississippi Locks and Dam No. 26; Appalachian Trail; the pharmaceutical industry; Job Corps (Manpower); Project ELF (Project Sanguine); Kickapoo River Valley Dam; Menominee Indian Restoration; and tire safety. The collection also provides information about a number of issues as a result of Nelson's committee assignments and his own personal interests including small business, taxes, the pollution of the Great Lakes, actions of the Reserve Mining Company, the Vietnam War and the draft, and the Panama Canal Treaty. Other broad subjects covered include matters related to the environment, civil rights, transportation, poverty, foreign affairs, civil liberties, labor, trade, agriculture, consumer affairs, education, Indian affairs, social security, veterans' affairs, and the state of Wisconsin in general. Prominent correspondents include Wisconsin legislators, John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Walter Mondale, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Lyndon B. Johnson, Gerald Ford, Hubert H. Humphrey, Ronald Reagan, Tom Eagleton, Stewart Udall, and William Proxmire.

William Proxmire papers, 1938-2004 (bulk 1957-1980)
Title:
William Proxmire papers, 1938-2004 (bulk 1957-1980)
Papers, mainly 1957-1980, of William Proxmire, Democratic Senator from Wisconsin (1957-1989), known for his liberal views on social issues, his fiscal conservatism, and the Golden Fleece awards with which he drew attention to wasteful government spending. Included are biographical materials and clippings, constituent correspondence, speeches, books and articles, sound and video recordings, newsletters and press releases, and federal agency case files. Files of staff members, the heart of the collection, document numerous issues of special concern to the Senator: the fairness doctrine; ratification of the international Genocide Treaty; Great Lakes harbors and shipping; and the SST, the B-1 bomber, and other military spending. General subject files concern numerous topics such as abortion, economic development in Wisconsin, opposition to the Senate leadership of Lyndon Baines Johnson, taxes, and energy. Also present are campaign files, schedules, voting records, and filmed campaign ads, televised "reports from Washington," and other films. Pre-Senatorial files include papers from Proxmire's three unsuccessful gubernatorial campaigns, his tenure as a one-term Wisconsin assemblyman, and recordings from his "Union Labor News" radio program. Photographs in the collection consist of portraits, publicity shots of the Senator posed with constituents, prominent political leaders, and at photo opportunities such as parades, work days, and the Wisconsin State Fair.
