Sarah Bernhardt Collection, ca. 1860-1977 (bulk 1880-1920).
The Sarah Bernhardt Collection contains theatrical production photographs, personal photographs, publicity stills, postcards, theater programs and playbills, clippings, and a scrapbook. Also present are several prints, caricatures, advertisements, and artistic sketches of Bernhardt. The Theater Production series comprises the bulk of the collection and contains production photographs and theater playbills and programs for over thirty Bernhardt productions. Although the bulk of the production photographs are portrait styled cabinet card photographs, this series contains several photographs of Bernhardt performing onstage. Bernhardt's famous productions of l'Aiglon, Camille, and Phedre, are especially well represented. Among the playbills and programs, there are several playscripts, translations, and other versions of plays which are specific to Bernhardt and carry her identification as "the only correct version of my plays translated and printed from my own promptbooks." There are also souvenir programs which contain information on multiple productions. The Clippings series, while comprehensive during the span of Bernhardt's career with reviews, is very extensive throughout 1923, the year of her death. The Other Materials series chiefly comprises personal photographs, some family and ceremonial photographs and various portraits, caricatures, advertisements, prints, and artistic sketches. Personalities represented with Bernhardt in the photographs include actress Lillie Langtry, playwright Victorien Sardou, theater mogul Martin Beck, escape artist Harry Houdini, and her manager William Connors. Also in this series is an Alphonse Mucha sketch of Bernhardt as Medea, a copy of a letter from "Her Artistic Life," and several advertisements in which Bernhardt used her notoriety to sell various products.

Tucker's correspondents were friends, political colleagues, readers of Liberty, and representatives of journals, publishing houses, and various organizations. Miscellaneous papers, 1870s-1930s, include records of the Unique Bookshop, of Liberty and The Radical Review, and of Tucker's activities as a book publisher; photographs (chiefly cabinet card and carte de visite portraits) of radicals and others, notably major European cultural figures; biographical miscellany of a variety of political and cultural figures; manuscript of Tucker's autobiography; and autobiographical file with correspondence, notes, essays, and other personal papers. Portland theater newspaper clippings, 1850-2000.
Chiefly articles pertaining to theaters in the greater Portland area over the past one hundred years and more. Portland, from early on, was the center of a thriving theater scene. John Wilkes Booth enjoyed an extended theatrical run here before his tragic date with history. Sarah Bernhardt also made a brief appearance in Portland. Not only was downtown Portland home for many theater companies, but also surrounding communities, including Peaks Island, were home to summer stock companies. With the coming of movies, and then television, the theaters lost their customers and were forced to close. Still today, the theater tradition lives on with Portland State and Portland Lyric Theater, among others.

The collection includes a note from James Mason, a script by Crane Wilbur and a script and drafts of Caubaye's articles about Sarah Bernhardt. Among the Bernhardt ephemera are a violet from Bernhardt's grave, a translation of her baptismal certificate and photostats of Bernhardt's letter introducing Caubaye to the American public. The scrapbook contains clippings, programs and photographs documenting Caubaye's stage career beginning with her first hit THE SQUALL in 1926 and ending with a 1966 published article about Sarah Bernhardt.

Autograph letter signed : London, to "My dear Collaborateur" [Robert du Pontavice de Heussey], 1883 May 24.
Apologizing for his delay in writing, and explaining that his failure to keep up their correspondence is due to his full schedule, noting that rehearsals for his new play [Rank and Riches] occupy his mornings and afternoons and that his evenings "are passed prostrate in an armchair with a cigar and a volume of Scribe's plays (what a master of his art!)" Wishing de Heussey success in Paris, regretting that Collins is "tied to London, unable to help [him]." Commenting on the "Great Sarah" [Bernhardt], wondering whether there is any "chance of feeling in that illustrious woman which may tell her that she has died in the agonies of poison often enough? And that a complete change in her 'répertoire' might help her with the public?" Sending kind remembrances to de Heussey's brother, offering him letters of introduction.

Autograph letter signed : Woodford, to Arthur Moore, [1889 Aug. 22].
Sympathizing with Moore's writer's block. Mentioning a purchase of Hardy's "Far from the Madding Crowd," and discussing it, comparing Hardy's style to Meredith's. Noting that Hardy's "rustics are not so veracious as Meredith's & his style is not so uniformly good" but that his insight into feminine character is "extraordinary." Mentioning that Swanton will be in town and that Dowson fears this will mean "an alcoholic debauch." Noting that his work on their collaborative novel "Felix Martyr" advances very slowly, and that he tried to work on his Madame de Viole for a change but was unable to work on that as well. Stating that he instead took to "writing of rondeaux" and enclosing (not present) a "specimen thereof." Looking forward to Moore's return and proposing a group of performances to see. Mentioning the death of Sarah Bernhardt's husband Damala and noting the strikes in the East and West India Docks, discussing the implications to his dry docking business. Again proclaiming the death of The Critic, and congratulating Moore on his brother's selection for the Indian Civil Service.

Typescript and notes for The Avante-garde Woman ca.1957
Typescript and notes for The Avante-garde Woman, ca.1957
Title:
Typescript and notes for The Avante-garde Woman ca.1957
Minda Lothar, author of RAGE OF JOY: THE DIVINE SARAH BERNHARDT (1968), a novel based on the life of actress Sarah Bernhardt, also wrote a paper analyzing what she termed the Avante-garde Woman personality type, primarily drawing upon women associated with the theater as her models for discussion. The typescript and notes for Minda Lothar's The Avante-garde Woman consist of 12 folders, each containing one section of the work. Textual evidence suggests that Lothar wrote this paper in 1957, but it appears never to have been published. The first chapter features analysis of the Avant-garde type as represented by fictional women, such as Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary, Henrik Ibsen's Nora Helmer and Hedda Gabler, Arthur Wing Pinero's Paula Tanqueray, and Tennessee Williams' Blanche Du Bois. In the second chapter, Lothar discusses real life actresses such as Sarah Bernhardt, Eleanora Duse, Gertrude Lawrence, and Tallulah Bankhead, as well as the French novelist George Sand. In the third and final chapter, Lothar examines the different ways these women dealt with the challenges each faced in their lives. Also included is an outline for the paper.

Smith, Ernest William. Papers, 1870-1976 (bulk 1890-1935).
Title:
Papers, 1870-1976 (bulk 1890-1935).
The Ernest Smith Papers, 1870-1976 (bulk 1890-1935), consist primarily of manuscripts, notes, photographs, correspondence, and memorabilia that reflect his career as a jounalist. The majority of the manuscripts suggest the possibile preparation of a second autobiography, tentatively entitled From Newsboy to War Correspondent: An Anecdotal Retrospect of Fifty Years of Newspaper Life. Also found here are several manuscripts and published versions of Smith's journalistic writings (1916-1930). The small body of correspondence, 1879-1931, relates to Smith's work as a journalist, as well as his editorial duties on the Revue des Revues (1890-1919), and as an editor and translator of works of Tolstoy and Rochefort. Significant correspondents include Sarah Bernhardt, Maxime Du Camp, Alexandre Dumas (fils), Kamel al-Husseini (Grand Mufti of Jerusalem), Henrik Ibsen, Maurice Maeterlinck, Helmut Graf von Moltke, Emile Ollivier, Ouida (Maria Louise Ramé), Henri Rochefort, Tatiana Sukhotina-Tolstaia, Alexandra Tolstoy, Leo Tolstoy, and Jules Verne, among others. Among the personal papers are found materials that relate to Smith's work and travels as a journalist, especially memorabilia of the Dreyfus Affair (1894-1895), and the Boer War (1899-1902). These include early socialist/anarchist leaflets and newspapers, and photographs taken by Smith during the siege of Ladysmith (1899-1900). Also present are the souvenir booklet and photographic stills for the 1931 British International Pictures film, Dreyfus, for which Smith was an advisor.

Autograph letters signed from Fanny Kemble to various recipients [manuscript], 1831-1890.
Correspondents: Lady [Anne] Byron, F[rances Power] Cobbe, William [Bodham] Donne, Henry [William] Greville, Mary Charlotte Lloyd and Harriet St. Leger. Includes 167 letters, many letters incomplete, and 9 leaves from her journals. Many of the letters describe her experiences in America and her views on slavery and on the Civil War. Letters written from London, Ireland, Switzerland, Italy and the United States. A letter to Donne (307) tells of John Brown's Raid and castigates him as a "fanatic maniac." Some letters to Greville discuss New England's reactions to the possibility of England's entering the war. Several letters touch on Shakespeare. Othello is a sermon against inordinate affections. She did like [Charles] Kean's Othello. She thinks she would not like Fechter's; his Iago must be like her father's (347, 247, 249, 245). Sarah Bernhardt's portrayal of Lady Macbeth recalled Mrs. Siddons' notion of her as a small delicate fair blue-eyed woman (187). The letters refer constantly to her family and friends and to contemporary artists, actors, writers, preachers and politicians, among them Joanne Baillie (223), Ann Bradshaw (247), Emily Brontë (353), John Gibson, William Godwin (387), Nathaniel Hawthorne (381), Harriet Hosmer, Henry James, Charles Kingsley (387-389), Frederic Leighton, Longfellow (413), Macaulay, F. D. Maurice (393), Mendelssohn, Theodore Parker, Adelaide Procter (415) and Shelley (363). Also, a letter to Fanny Kemble from Frances P. Cobbe, July 8, [1875] (19b), a letter to Frances Cobbe from Fanny Kemble's maid, Eleanor Brianzoni, January 19, 1898, telling her of Fanny Kemble's death (457), a poem on Venice by Fanny Kemble, ca. 1861 (453) and several photographs and illustrations. Poem listed in Folger index of first lines. The fragments of her journals, 1831-1832, ca. 1840 and ca. 1850, include an anecdote about Mrs. Siddons and Richard Sheridan (435), musings on Lawrence's drawings of the Kemble family (449), a description of her feelings on seeing an actress on her first night (441) and a discussion of The tempest and A midsummer night's dream (439).
