Consists of administrative files of Charles Sprague Sargent as director of the Arboretum, including both letterpress copybooks and incoming correspondence. Material pertains to fund raising for collecting expeditions to China, Korea, Japan, and Tibet in the 1910s and 1920s and to horticulture at Arnold. Considerable correspondence exists with John Muir, 1897-1912; Ernest H. Wilson and Joseph Rock concerning their botanical collecting in Asia; and botanists in Europe and the United States. Also includes a folder with copies of outgoing correspondence from Harlan P. Kelsey, nurseryman, to Sargent and E.H. Wilson.

Title: Manly Hardy Correspondence

Includes photocopies of letters from Manly Hardy to William Brewster dating from 1877 to 1910. The letters discuss their mutual interest in ornithology and in collecting specimens of birds as well as what specimens were available on the Boston market and Brewster's visits to Umbagog Lake, Maine. The collection also includes one letter from Hardy to Prof. E.A. Allen, 1890; four letters to Walter Deane, 1898, 1900; one letter to Abbott H. Thayer, 1900; and one letter, 1898, to Hardy from John A. Lord, a taxidermist in Portland, Maine. The collection also includes photocopies of letters dating from 1886 to 1918 to Brewster from Manly Hardy's daughter, Fannie Hardy Eckstorm, as well as a letter dated 1916 from Eckstorm to Samuel Henshaw, director of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard

Title: Papers of James Franklin Collins, 1884-1935 (inclusive).

The Collins papers consis of three main parts: letters to Collins; photographs, negatives and lantern slides made by Collins; and smaller items, mostly pertaining to his field trips. The letters are from about 240 correspondents, and date from 1884-1925 with most letters earlier than 1920. By and large they could be described as general botanical correspondence. The photographic materials consist of snapshots, labeled negatives, and lantern slides, all dating from about 1900-1935. The subjects of the photos include: landscapes and cityscapes, field expeditions and excursions, family and friends and their homes, closeups of individual plants and trees. The smaller items include a small notebook containing notes on geography and plants from the 1906 trip to the Gaspé, reports and collection labels related to the 1923 trip to the Gaspé, a plaster model of Mt. Logan (in the Gaspé) and a notebook containing notes on Salix.
