Britton, Elizabeth Gertrude
Variant namesElizabeth Gertrude Knight Britton (1857-1934) was a bryologist, educator and one of the founders of the New York Botanical Garden. She served as Honorary Curator of Mosses from 1912-1929. she was born Elizabeth Gertrude Knight in New York City on January 9, 1857. After graduating from Normal School (Hunter College) in 1875, she taught Natural Science there until her marriage to Nathaniel Lord Britton in 1885. She was active in the Torrey Botanical Club as Curator of Mosses (1884-1885) and editor of the Torrey Botanical Club Bulletin (1886-1888). She was the only woman to be named as a charter member of the Botanical Society of America at its founding in 1893. In 1902 she helped organize the Wildflower Preservation Society. From 1916-1919 she was President of the Sullivant Moss Society. She collected in the Adirondack and Appalachian Mountains, Nova Scotia, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Cuba. She was the author of 346 popular and scientific articles.
