Gray Herbarium originated with the gift of Asa Gray's herbarium and library to Harvard University in 1864. Early curators and directors were: Sereno Watson (1874-1892); Benjamin Lincoln Robinson (1892-1935); and Merritt Lyndon Fernald (Curator, 1935-1937 and Director, 1937-1947). The Bailey Plan, proposing unification of botanical activities at Harvard, was presented in 1945; and Gray Herbarium relocated to its new building adjoining Farlow Herbarium in May 1954. Arnold Arboretum and Gray collections were integrated in the following year.
