Of interest is an account of the burning of the New Market Va. academy in 1839. With the papers are a few bills, receipts and legal documents as well as a subscription list, 1808-9, to Der Virginische Volksberichter, und Neumarketer Wochenschrift, published by Ambrose Henkel; a newspaper subscription list, 1815-16, of New Market postmaster Solomon Henkel; memoranda books, 1830 of Winchester merchants John Miller, Adam Miller, George F. Miller, and Godfrey Miller; and diaries and dental practice journal, 1846-49, of William S. Miller.

The correspondence and business papers of Dr. Solomon Henkel comprise the bulk of the collection. His medical and pharmaceutical practice is the chief topic. There are accounts and correspondence with Baltimore and Philadelphia druggists as well as letters from patients describing symptoms and requesting treatment. A letter re: the construction of an electrifying machine for "rheumatick" complaints and one from Peachy Harrison asking for smallpox vaccine to prevent an anticipated outbreak in Harrisonburg are of interest. There is also considerable correspondence re his printing and bookselling business including several letters from Philadelphia publisher, Mathew Carey. Letters to Henkel as New Market postmaster request new routes and offices. Also include papers of other family members, particularly David and Moses Henkel. Topics often concern the Lutheran Church, doctrinal controversy, denominational differences and potential mergers, church conferences, printings and translations of religious works, and mission travel. Of interest are the objections of a Tennessee committee to the constitution of the general synod, a description of missionary work among the Wiandot Indians of Ohio, letters from Daniel Bryan seeking support in an upcoming election, and a ficticious account of a first century German Jew who travels to Palestine and witnesses the events of Holy Week.

Contains papers of the Henkel family of New Market, Va., the bulk of which include letters, religious documents and newspapers, and advertisements published by the Henkel Press. Also present are some Henkel family history materials and business documents and miscellaneous secular materials. Letters, either in German or English, include correspondence mostly to and from North Carolina and Tennessee as well as Virginia. Religious documents reflect the family's dedication to the Lutheran faith and include sermons, etc.; some music (in handwritten notation); Rockingham County marriage licenses; and papers on religious and church/Tennessee Synod matters. (cont.) Secular documents include prose; poetry and speeches on political and social concerns of the day (anti-slavery, intemperance); business papers; and student notebooks (some containing fraktur). Family history and Henkel Press publications including oversize items make up the largest part of the collection and contain handwritten drafts and printed advertisements; miscellaneous sales and school notices; a formula for ink used in printing; and various issues of Virginische Volksberichter und Neumarketer Wochenschrift, and Westliche Correspondenz, and other similar publications.

Correspondence, chiefly of David Henkel to his brother Solomon and other family members, concerns religious publication in German and English, book sales, clerical travels to North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, synodical affairs, church doctrine, and some family news. Other family correspondence is concerned primarily with the 1840s translation and 1850s revision of the "Book of Concord." In addition to correspondence the collection contains Samuel G. Henkel's medical notebooks on nosology, osteology and myology; a Greek exercise book; German and English manuscripts regarding Lutheran doctrine, Biblical exegesis, and synodicall affairs; sermons; translations of the "Apologia" of the confession and Luther's small catechism; and papers concerning the Tennessee Synod. Correspondents include Philip Henkel and Samuel Henkel as well as translators H. Wetzel and J.R. Moser, and Lutheran scholars Charles Philip Krauth, William Frederic Lehmann, John Gottleib Morris, and Charles Frederick Schaeffer.
