Papers of the Henkel family, 1792-1915 [manuscript], (bulk 1792-1849).

The collection contains manuscripts, essays, sermons, correspondence, hymns, church records and reports, receipts and genealogical notes. Henkel Press items include the manuscript of its first publication, 1806, "Verrichtung der Special-Conferenz der Evang. Luth. Prediger Im Staat Virginien"; Kirchliches Jahrbuch, 1829; David Henkel against the Unitarians, 1830; Charles Henkel's index and preface for the Church Hymn Book, 1838; two sermon books in the hand of [Paul Henkel?]; an essay by Moses Henkel, "Dialogue between Mr. Hard and Mr. Soft"; and a translation of John Heubner's "Bible history." There are also several items pertaining to the history of the Tennessee Synod of the Lutheran Church including various reports, articles, and statistics. Genealogical papers include a sketch of Solbiger Henkel and papers re the Gerhard Henkel family. Correspondence, chiefly in German, contains letters from ministers of the Tennessee Synod, and petitions from congregations in remote areas requesting pastoral assistance.
