Archibald Constable ( 1774-1827 ), publisher, was born in Carnbee, Fife, the son of the factor to the Earl of Kellie. He started his bookseller's apprenticeship in 1788 with Peter Hill of Edinburgh and by 1795 he had opened his own business. In 1798 he began publishing books and in 1801 he bought the Scots Magazine . In 1802 he became the publisher for the Edinburgh Review and also acted as publisher for Sir Walter Scott ( 1771-1832 ) and other distinguished authors of the time. In 1812 Constable bought the copyright of the Encyclopaedia Britannica . The financial collapse in 1826 of his London agents, Hurst, Robinson and Co, brought about not only Constable's financial ruin but also the bankruptcy of Scott. He fought back with the publication of Constable's Miscellany ( 1827 ), but his financial troubles hastened his death.

Archibald Constable (1774-1827), the Edinburgh publisher. For fuller details of his life and writings see the Dictionary of National Biography.
Scottish publisher.
Archibald Constable apprenticed with an Edinburgh bookseller, opened his own shop, and eventually became a publisher. A canny and successful businessman, he published Edinburgh Review, the works of Walter Scott, and Encyclopaedia Britannica. Eventually, liberal policies toward authors contributed to overextending his resources, and the firm went bankrupt.

Sending part of Canto II of Rokeby; promising to send the other three sheets int he course of the week; hoping to have completed the first three Cantos by the time he leaves Abbotsford on 11 November; suggesting that the poem can be out by Christmas and instructing Ballantyne "you must not daudle over your typographical scruples; mentioning that because the "public will never be pleased with exactly the same thing a second time," he "saw the necessity of giving a certain degree of novelty, by throwing the interest more on character than in my former poems."

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.
