Browne, Charles, 1793-1856. [Genealogies of four early Massachusetts families: Balch, Bridge, Browne, and May].
Title:
[Genealogies of four early Massachusetts families: Balch, Bridge, Browne, and May].
Handwritten genealogies treating the descendants of John and Margery Balch of Salem, 1626; John Bridge of Cambridge, 1631; Abraham and Lydia Brown of Watertown, 1636; and John May of Roxbury, 1628. Balch material includes correspondence from the 1840s, and a small notebook of data "copied verbatim from a memo prepared by Benj Balch of Salem." Bridge material includes correspondence from the 1840s. Brown material includes a printed chart, dating from the mid nineteenth century, showing several generations of descendants from Abraham and Lydia Brown. May family material is drawn, in part, from an earlier account of the family prepared by Col. Joseph May. Joseph May also compiled a genealogy of the Sewell family, since his wife, Dorothy, was the daughter of Chief Justice Samuel Sewell. This is transcribed. Joseph and Dorothy (Sewell) May were the grandparents of author Louisa May Alcott.

Title:
Records relating to Harvard College collected by Charles Ewer, 1712-1723.
This collection contains ten 18th century documents relating to Harvard College and President John Leverett collected by Charles Ewer. The documents primarily pertain to the Harvard Fellowship controversy between 1716 and 1723 that expanded from internal disagreements about the role of Tutors in College governance into a political battle between the Corporation, Board of Overseers, and the Massachusetts General Court. The collection also includes a 1712 letter from John Leverett to Addington Davenport regarding a College petition before a Massachusetts General Court Committee, and 1716 and 1722 bonds between John Leverett, Elisha Cooke, and the Harvard College Treasurer. The Fellowship controversy material relates to the role of Harvard Corporation Fellows and provides evidence of the intensive review and interpretation of the College's founding documents by both Tutor Nicholas Sever and President Leverett, and reflect a period when the composition of the Harvard Corporation, the role of the Harvard faculty in College governance, and the influence on the Board of Overseers and the Massachusetts General Court in College governance was scrutinized and politicized.

This collection contains six documents related to the Harvard Fellowship controversy from between 1716 and 1723 that expanded from internal disagreements about the role of Tutors in College governance into a political battle between the Corporation, Board of Overseers, and the Massachusetts General Court. The documents in this collection are in Tutor Nicholas Sever's hand and include manuscript copies of Sever and Tutor William Welsteed's 1721 and 1722 petitions to the Harvard Board of Overseers requesting the Tutors be acknowledged of their right to be Fellows in the Harvard Corporation, and related documents outlining the historical precedence within College laws and charters for the Tutors' argument. The documents provide evidence of the intensive review and interpretation of the College's founding documents by Sever in his effort to change the membership of the Corporation.

Hull, John, 1624-1683. Papers, 1624-1685.
Title:
Papers, 1624-1685.
There are three items in this collection. The first is an octavo volume with notations of events between 1624 and 1682. It is divided into two sections--one containing entries of a personal nature, the other notations of events of public significance. The public entries focus on church, state, and military affairs in the colonies and England. There are also notations about the weather, natural disasters, fires, etc. This section totals 106 pages of the volume (the numbering of the pages is incorrect). The entries of a more private nature start with a brief account of his early years. There are notations of births, deaths, and marriages. Hull chronicled his successful public life, recording important business ventures, his admission to the church, etc. In both parts it is difficult to ascertain when the entries were made, and, often, they do not follow in strict chronological order. Some entries are in shorthand. The second item in this collection is Hull's Letterbook, 1670-1685 (the dates on the spine of the volume are incorrect). The correspondence after November 6, 1683, was written by Samuel Sewall who took responsibility for the business after the death of his father-in-law. The letters are of a business nature and detail Hull's trading interests and mercatile transactions. Some entries are in shorthand. There is a two volume typed transcription of the letters made by Miss Florence Berlin, Samuel Eliot Morison's secretary, in 1930. The two volumes total 640 pages. There is also one carbon copy of the transcription. The final item in the collection is the manuscript copy of Hermann Frederick Clarke's book on John Hull. The manuscript includes photographs of silver pieces made by Hull and his partner, Robert Sanderson ( -1693). Clarke's book was published by the Southworth-Anthoensen Press in 1940. Clarke also wrote an article on Hull for the October 1936 Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society.
