In 1852 Charles Foster together with Captain William C. Talbot, Captain Josiah P. Keller and Andrew J. Pope, all of East Machias, entered into a partnership to establish a lumber business in the Puget Sound region, at what later became Port Gamble, Washington. Known variously as Teekalet Mill Co., Puget Mill Co., and Pope & Talbot Co., the business operated continuously from 1853 until 1995.
