Letters, 1689-1790.

Letters of Congregational minister Samuel Mather (1706-1785) to his son Samuel (1737-1813) during the latter's service with Provincial forces at Fort Edward during the French and Indian War; in Quebec as Commissary until the change from military to civil rule and Mather Jr.'s return to Boston (1771); and to him in England and Wales as an American refugee during and following the Revolution. Mather's letters discuss family and local Boston news, the progress of the French and Indian War, reaction to the Stamp Act (1765) and its later repeal, fatherly advice and concern for his son, and disapproval at his choice of loyalties and flight from the U.S. (Cont.) Also, correspondence between Thomas Hutchinson Jr. and Mather Jr. regarding money matters and stipends for refugees; a document on "The Case of Samuel Mather ..., an American Refugee" (1790); and earlier letters to and from Judge Samuel Sewall (1652-1730) and from Cotton Mather.
