According to Oliver, this house, which Goodhue designed for himself, was never built. In 1920 Goodhue enlarged a small house in Montecito.
At the time of this project the address of B.G. Goodhue and R. Guastavino Co. was given as 2 West 47th St. (New York, N.Y.) and Fuller Building (New York, N.Y.) respectively.
This is the fourth St. Thomas Church in New York and the second on this site. The R.M. Upjohn structure of 1870 burned in 1905.

Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue was born on April 28, 1869, in Pomfret, Connecticut. Educated at Russell's Collegiate and Military Institute in New Haven from 1880-1883, where he was known among his classmates for skill in caricature and sketching. Without the financial means to attend college, Goodhue chose instead to seek an apprenticeship with an architectural firm in New York City. In 1884, he began as an assistant and novice draftsman in the office of Renwick, Aspinall and Russell, where he acquired an intensive, but largely self-directed, education in architectural design and production. Moonlighting after hours as a draftsman and designer, Goodhue became adept at highly detailed and atmospheric perspective renderings of extant structures and his own imaginative architecture.
In 1891, Goodhue was awarded a prestigious competition commission to design a cathedral in Dallas, Texas. Seeking collaborative assistance with this large project, Goodhue meet with Boston architects Ralph Adams Cram and Charles Francis Wentworth, who shortly offered him a full partnership in their firm. Although the cathedral remained unbuilt, Cram, Goodhue and Wentworth renamed Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson in 1898 received numerous commissions throughout the New England for ecclesiastical and civic buildings and residences in the English Gothic and Beaux-Arts styles. Both Goodhue and Cram were well known for associations and collaborations with noted artisans and craftsmen, particularly members of the Society of Arts and Crafts, Boston, with whom they frequently socialized. With the commission to design the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1902, Goodhue returned to New York City to open a branch of CGF to more closely supervise design and construction at the site. From that office, Goodhue designed numerous other major buildings, including St. Thomas Church (New York, New York, 1905-1920); Rice University (Houston, Texas, 1909); the Chapel of the Intercession (New York, New York, 1910-1914); and the Panama-Pacific Exposition (San Diego, California, 1911-1915).
Goodhue's business relationship with Cram and Ferguson was dissolved in 1913 and Goodhue became an independent architect, employing several dozen staff by the start of World War I. He continued to receive significant commissions, including the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer (New York, New York, 191-1918); Saint Bartholomew's Church (New York, New York, 1914-1919); California Institute of Technology (Pasadena California, 1915-1917); Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago (Chicago, Illinois, 1918-1928); the Nebraska State Capitol (Lincoln, Nebraska, 1920-1932); and the Los Angeles Public Library (1921-1926). Although never formally trained in architectural idioms, Goodhue's work frequently referred to the Arts and Crafts movement and a vernacular aesthetic, often incorporating the work of talented craftsmen.
Increasingly reductivist and modern after World War I, Goodhue often integrated historicist Mediterranean and Indo-European aesthetics with classical massing to achieve a recognizable style of his own. Goodhue's commissions took him across the United States, and he traveled widely for business and pleasure after 1900, often to see architecture of other cultures and regions, which he sketched with great aplomb. In the spring of 1924, after a trip to Los Angeles, where he was involved in building the public library, Goodhue succumbed to a heart attack, just days before his fifty-fifth birthday. His ashes were interred in a church of his own design, the Chapel of the Intercession, in New York City, in a tomb designed by a long-time colleague, sculptor Lee Lawrie. After Goodhue's sudden death, his office was reorganized as Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue Associates to complete outstanding commissions. In 1931 the firm was renamed by its partners Mayers, Murray & Phillip, closing finally in 1940.

Hildreth Meière papers
Title:
Hildreth Meière papers
The papers of Hildreth Meière measure 27.3 linear feet and 1.40 GB and date from 1901 to 2011, with the bulk of material dating from 1911 to 1960. The collection documents Meière's life and travels, and her long and prolific career as an architectural muralist through biographical material, correspondence, writings, thirteen diaries, files regarding her war relief work during the Spanish Civil War and World War II, printed and digital materials, extensive photographs and slides, eight sketchbooks, and two videocassettes and 93 reels of motion picture film documenting her travels, her volunteer efforts in Spain following the civil war, artwork, and home movies. Biographical material includes an autobiographical narrative written by Meière, her many awards and certificates, membership information, passports, her U.S. Navy service records from World War I, documentation of her brief marriage and family genealogy, obituaries, and memorial service documentation. Also found are extensive writings and research conducted by Meière's daughter, Louise Meière Dunn, which include a complete list of Meière's commissions, detailed biographical narratives, and records of Meière's works held elsewhere. The papers contain Meière's personal and family correspondence, travel correspondence, and business correspondence regarding professional activities. Much of the correspondence with family and friends was written during Meière's extensive travels over the world. Both family and travel correspondence have extensive indexes, summaries, and in some cases, transcripts prepared by Meière's daughter, Louise Meière Dunn. Some of the indexes, summaries and transcripts are digital. Writings include poetry and diaries kept during childhood and school years, travel diaries, essays and talks written about Meière's work, writings Meière prepared for committees of the National Mural Painters Association, and detailed travelogues of her trips to Constantinople and the Balkans in 1933, to Russia in 1936, her "Grand Tour" to Australia, Southeast Asia, India, Africa, and Europe in 1952-1953, and her "Holy Land" tour of the Middle East in 1954. Civilian War Service Records document Meière's efforts at war relief organization during and after the Spanish Civil War and during World War II. The Spanish Civil War files include extensive photographs provided by the Spanish government as well as three motion picture films documenting refugees and damaged architecture and public artwork shot by Meière during a trip sponsored by Franco's government. World War II activities concern Meière's efforts to organize artists in the United States to design and execute murals and other works of public art at military facilities around the U.S. Travel records include maps, ephemera, slides, and 83 motion picture films taken on trips abroad between 1933 and 1958. Trips include Eastern and Western Europe, the Mediterranean Region and the Middle East, South America, Mexico and Guatemala, India, Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, and the UK. The motion picture films are mostly shot in Kodachrome color and many contain intertitles prepared by Meière to identify locations for travel lectures. Printed materials consist primarily of clippings and publications that reference Meière's work, contain profiles of her, or contain published writings by her. A single published educational film is also found, given to her by an Australian filmmaker friend. Additional photographs, digital photographs and moving images include personal photographs of Meière, with portraits by Peter A. Juley and Sons and Berenice Abbott, photographs of many of her commissioned works, and a few photographs of artwork by others. Home movies show Meière with friends in 1926 and 1940. Among the photographic documentation of artworks by Meière and others are motion picture films of the 1939 New York World's Fair, the D.C. Municipal Building Frieze, and the 1937 Paris Fair; also found are 311 lantern slides and 201 glass copy negatives of her own completed works as well as murals she documented while traveling, notably murals in Norway and Oberammergau, Bavaria, taken in the 1930s. Eight sketchbooks date to her early years as an art student and artist and include many figure studies, landscapes, and theatrical sketches made at home and abroad.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.
