Serge Diaghilev was a Russian ballet impresario, the founder, producer and artistic director of Ballets Russes. In his late years he turned to book and manuscript collecting. He built up a collection of rare Russian printed books, manuscripts and scores.
Sergei Pavlovich Diaghilev was a Russian art critic, patron, ballet impresario and founder of the Ballets Russes from which many famous dancers and choreographers would later arise. Born March 31, 1872 in Gruzino, Novgorod province, Russia, he studied law at St. Petersburg University and singing and composition at St. Petersburg Conservatory. In the late 1890s he joined a circle of writers and painters led by the Russian painters Léon Bakst and Alexandre Benois, then founded and edited the progressive art journal Mir Iskusstva (The World of Art, 1899-1904). In 1899 he became artistic adviser to the Imperial Theaters in Moscow and produced several operas and ballets. From 1904 to 1908 he organized a number of foreign exhibitions of Russian art. In 1906 he settled in Paris, France, where, for his 1908 production of the opera Boris Godunov by Mussorgsky, he brought the celebrated bass Feodor Chaliapin. In 1909, in collaboration with the Russian dancer and choreographer Mikhail Fokine and a group of Russian dancers that included Vaclav Nijinsky, Anna Pavlova, Mikhail Mordkin, Tamara Karsavina, and Adolph Bolm, Diaghilev established the Ballets Russes. Scenic designers for Ballets Russes, besides Bakst and Benois, included the French artists Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, and Maurice Utrillo, as well as the poet-designer Jean Cocteau (who also wrote ballet scenarios for Diaghilev) and Pablo Picasso. Diaghilev commissioned many musical scores from the Russian-born composer I. Stravinsky, including The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), The Rite of Spring (1913), Les Noces (1923), and Apollon musagète (1928). He also commissioned Daphnis et Chloé (1912), by M. Ravel, The Three Cornered Hat (1919), by the M. de Falla, and works by D. Milhaud and E. Satie. Major choreographers of the 20th century who passed through his company were Russian-born George Balanchine, Léonide Massine, Bronislava Nijinska, and Sergei Lifar. S. DIaghilev died August 19, 1929 in Venice.
Born in 1905, in Kyiv, Ukraine, Serge Lifar was introduced to dance in 1920 by Bronislava Nijinska, under whom he began to study. Brought to France to join Sergey Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, Lifar studied with the eminent teacher Enrico Cecchetti and became premier danseur of the company. He created the title roles in a number of G. Balanchine's early ballets, including The Prodigal Son. After Diaghilev's death in 1929 Lifar joined the Paris Opera Ballet as premier danseur and ballet master. In 1932 he was awarded the title of professeur de danse and began reforms of the Opera's school to enable its dancers to perform the more modern ballets, particularly his own. From 1929 until 1959, excluding 1944-1946 seasons, apart from revivals of classical ballets, Lifar staged more than fifty works for the Opera. A noted experimenter, he produced his first ballet without music, Icare (1935), and published the same year the controversial Le Manifeste du choréographe. He developed the importance of the male dancer in his Prometheus (1929) and Romeo and Juliet (Prokofiev, 1955). Lifar died in 1986.
Biographical Note
Sergei Pavlovich Dyagilev was born in the province of Novgorod on March 31, 1872. In 1890 he came to St. Petersburg as a law student and soon became a member of the circle of young musicians, painters, and writers assembled around Alexander Benois and Léon Bakst. In the same year of 1899 in which he co-founded the progressive art magazine “Mir Iskoustva” (“The World of Art”), Dyagilev was appointed artistic advisor of the Maryinsky Theatre, where he was in charge of the publication of the theatre annual and of the highly successful productions of “Sadko” and “Sylvia.” He resigned from his post in 1901, and after the magazine stopped appearing in 1904, he concentrated on organizing exhibitions of Russian art in St. Petersburg and Paris.
In 1908 Dyagilev brought a production of “Boris Godunov” to Paris with Chaliapin and was then invited to present a Paris season of Russian opera and ballet in 1909. With some of the best dancers from St. Petersburg and Moscow he scored a unique triumph in May and June 1909 in Paris. Repeat visits during the following years led to the gradual formation of his Ballets Russes, which became an independent private company when Vaslav Nijinsky resigned from the Maryinsky Theatre. He directed les Ballets Russes until his death on August 19, 1929, in Venice. His company, financed solely by the European aristocracy, was often on the verge of bankruptcy and never returned to Russia after the October Revolution (nor did it ever perform there).

Serge Grigoriev/Ballets Russes archive, 1909-2009 (bulk 1909-1952).
The Serge Grigoriev/Ballets Russes Archive is comprised of materials that document Sergeĭ Grigorʹev's career as a dancer and régisseur (rehearsal director) for the Ballets Russes de Serge Diaghilev and for Col. W. de Basil's Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo. It consists primarily of photographs, photograph albums, and notes and manuscript drafts for Grigorʹev's book S.P. Diaghilev i ego 'Russkii Balet,' 1909-1929, which was translated into English and published as The Diaghilev Ballet, 1909-1929. The archive also contains Grigorʹev's unpublished manuscript for his work Original'nyi Russkii Balet pod upravleniem Colonel W. De Basil 1932-1952. Although the majority of the materials relate to the companies of Diaghilev and de Basil, the archive contains several items from another Russian ballet company, the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. In addition, the archive includes programs, additional writings by Grigorʹev, clippings, tour information and drawings.

Autograph letter signed, dated : Toledo June 26 1916, to G[eorges] Jean-Aubry, 1916 June 26.
Saying that he received from their friend R[ogelio del] Villar the news concerning the Spanish translation of Jean-Aubry's book La musique française d'ajourd'hui, that Nin's collaboration would have been invaluable but asking how they can accept his work without pay, discussing other aspects of Salazar's proposed translation, saying that Falla has agreed to write the preface--he is at present in Granada with Serge Diaghilev getting ideas for the performance by the Bailes Rusos [i.e. Ballets Russes] of his Noches en los jardines de España and that he will return in two or three days and begin writing the preface--, asking if Jean-Aubry wishes the dedication to the Guérit[t]es and Fauré's preface included in the translation, etc.

Marinetti, Filippo Tommaso, 1876-1944. Marinetti correspondence and papers, 1886-1974.
Title:
Marinetti correspondence and papers, 1886-1974.
The largest portion of Marinetti correspondence and papers consists of letters and submissions directed to Marinetti (Series I and II), first as editor of "Poesia" and later as the leader of the futurist movement and publisher of the book series "Edizioni futuriste di Poesia." These letters, together with those from Marinetti (Series III) to an often unnamed correspondent ("Mon ami"), demonstrate how Marinetti stimulated debate about his movement in part by sending queries to a broad range of international literary figures regarding free verse or the futurist manifestos. He also critiques the writing submitted to him according to futurist criteria, and warmly praises pieces that meet his idiosyncratic standards. His correspondents, in turn, praise or critique Marinetti's writing. Of particular interest are conflicted responses to the first futurist manifesto in 1909. Letters from fellow futurists, such as Carlo Carra,̀ Umberto Boccioni, Francesco Cangiullo, and Fortunato Depero, reveal wranglings internal to the movement, as well as the zeal with which they pursued their shared aims. After the First World War, letters are concerned with politics, and during the fascist years, many regard requests for government funding for individual futurist artists. Finally, following Marinetti's death, letters directed to Benedetta or Scrivo pertain to preservation of the futurist legacy, despite the stain of fascism, through retrospective exhibitions, anthologies, and conferences.

Gabriel Astruc papers, 1904-1925, 1907-1914
Title:
Gabriel Astruc papers 1904-1925 1907-1914
Correspondence including telegrams, copies of outgoing letters, and some typed transcripts of telegrams and letters, inventories, financial papers, notes and plans, clippings, programs, announcements, and drafts of contracts and reports relating primarily to the early activities of Sergei Diaghilev in bringing Russian ballet and opera to Western Europe. Between 1907 and 1913 Diaghilev collaborated with Astruc regarding the organization of his various artistic enterprises, including the Paris seasons of ballet and opera, negotiations for tours to the United States and South America, summer performances at Deauville in 1912, and a ballet season in Lyons in 1913. Documentation of the first Saison Russe presented by Diaghilev at the Théâtre du Chatelet in Paris in 1909 is particularly thorough and includes inventories of costumes and scenery for the works presented and a confidential report on the season which Astruc sent to Baron Frederiks, Chief Minister of the Russian Imperial Court. Astruc's dealings with Ida Rubinstein and Natasha Trouhanova regarding enterprises undertaken independent of Diaghilev are also documented.

Title:
Letter to Boris Kochno, 1967-1972.
Parmenia Migel Ekstrom writes (mostly from New York City) to Boris Kochno trying to help publish his book on Serge Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. She also talks about creating an exhibition of his collection and of her attempts to create a Diaghilev foundation in Venice. The book, Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, was published in English in 1970. Kochno's collection, with that of Serge Lifar, was exhibited at Musée Galliéra in Paris in 1972. The Diaghilev foundation never materialised. Ekstrom also talks about contemporary dance people such as Marie Rambert, Tamara Karsavina, Carla Fracci, and Leonid Massine.
