Title:
Department of State diplomatic correspondence, 1831-1832, 1835-1846, undated.
Diplomatic correspondence was created in the course of conducting diplomacy between the Republic of Texas and other nations (the United States of America, England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Hanse towns (or Hanseatic League), Spain, the Papal States, Mexico, and the rebellious Mexican state of Yucatan). It consists of correspondence between the Republic of Texas' Department of State and diplomatic and consular representatives, both Texan and foreign, dating 1831-1832, 1835-1846, and undated. This correspondence documents the attempts, both successful and unsuccessful, by which Texas sought recognition, aid, and annexation into the Union. The letter books contain copies of both incoming and outgoing correspondence, and document negotiations for loans, and treaties of commerce and recognition, particularly a treaty with Mexico. U.S. diplomatic correspondence discusses Indian affairs, recognition and annexation of Texas by the United States, negotiations for loans, settlement of claims between the two countries, negotiations for duties, extradition, boundaries, and general information on relations with the United States and activities there as reported by the commissioners. English diplomatic correspondence discusses instructions from the Secretary of State to Texas representatives and their reports of activities back to him, claims against Texas for captured British vessels, commercial agreements, recognition of Texas independence, relations with Mexico, protection of British subjects in Texas, slavery and the slave trade, the Texas blockade of Mexican ports, and Texas' annexation to the United States. French diplomatic correspondence discusses instructions of the Department of State to its agents, letters of appointment, attempts to obtain commercial treaties, recognition of Texas independence by the French government, negotiations for a treaty of recognition with Spain, attempts to have France negotiate a treaty of peace and recognition between Texas and Mexico, and establishment of regular mail service between France and Texas. Correspondence relating to the diplomatic relations with Belgium, the Netherlands, Hanse towns, and Spain discusses the recognition of Texas in these countries and Texas' attempts to obtain treaties of amity and commerce. Correspondence relating to the diplomatic relations with Mexico discusses attempts to negotiate a treaty with Mexico, Mexican invasions of Texas, Texas prisoners in Mexico, negotiations with Yucatan for use of the Texas Navy, and the treaty of peace between Yucatan and Mexico; also, a few documents relate to domestic affairs, particularly Indian relations and the depreciation of Texas currency. Correspondence relating to the diplomatic relations with Yucatan includes the treaty by which Texas agreed to furnish naval support to Yucatan's revolution. Correspondents include Republic of Texas Secretaries of State Samuel P. Carson, Stephen F. Austin, James P. Henderson, Robert A. Irion, Barnard Bee, James Webb, David G. Burnet, Abner S. Lipscomb, Joseph Waples, Anson Jones, Ebenezer C. Allen, and Ashbel Smith; Republic of Texas President Mirabeau B. Lamar; Texas Minister to the United States Richard G. Title:
Topical pamphlet collection, <1741>-<1996>.
A long-established, artificial, still-growing collection consisting largely of printed pamphlets, with articles, reprints, some ephemera, typescripts, photocopied manuscript material, and one set of slides (to accompany a typescript item) also included. Some of the items within were bound during the 19th century, some are loose. Covering a broad range of topics relating to American (and particularly New England) history, life, and thought, the Topical Pamphlet Collection provides background and context for the more specifically Concord-related materials in the Concord Free Public Library Special Collections. The collection--not to be confused with the Concord Pamphlet Collection--includes <883> items, dating from <1741> to <1996>. Series I (Historical Topics) includes <352> items dating between <1741> and <1996>, Series II (Individuals, As Author or Subject) <300> items between <1761> and <1963>, Series III (Massachusetts Towns--History, Anniversaries, Description, etc.) <127> items between <1748> and <1991>, and Series IV (Pamphlet Materials on Multiple Topics, Organized by Form) <104> items between <1752> and <1940>. Some of the bound volumes include the occasional out-of-scope pamphlet. Moreover, there is some topical overlap of material in different subseries.

Papers, 1804-1852.
The papers of Charles Edward Dudley have great research potential primarily because of his association with the Albany Regency, a political organization that became part of the present day Democratic Party, was an early champion of the spoils system as a means of maintaining party dicipline. By bestowing political appointments on friends, and turning enemies out of office the Albany Regency became one of the mostv powerful political organizations in New York State from the 1820's through 1840's. Leaders of the regency included Martin Van Buren, William L. Marcy, and Silas Wright all of whom corresponded with Charles Dudley, usually concerning matters of patronage. When in the Senate, Dudley recieved advice from the leaders regarding the Regency's stance on proposed legislation.

Title:
Silas Wright, Sr., letters, 1810-1843.
Chiefly letters from Silas Wright, Sr., of Weybridge, Vt., mostly to his son Silas Wright, Jr., of Canton, N.Y., with a few to other family members and three (letters of confession) written to the Weybridge Congregational Church. The letters tell of family health and news, weather and work on the farm, sometimes mentioning prices of butter and other farm produce; one (1821 June 2) mentions that daughter Crucy Wright was staying with neighbors "weaving for two of three weeks". A number of letters (1820-1821) relate to the division of the farm between sons Samuel and Daniel Leonard (called Leonard) and the establishment of monetary inheritance for the other sons and daughters. Later letters reflect the concern for his youngest son Pliny Wright who appears to be suffering from some form of mental illness. Includes one letter from Silas Wright, Jr., to Samuel O. Wright, son of Silas's brother Samuel.

Parker, Ely Samuel. Ely Samuel Parker Papers. 1794-1946.
Title:
Ely Samuel Parker Papers
A Sachem and Civil War adjutant to Ulysses Grant, Ely Samuel Parker was an important figure in the Seneca Indian nation during the first half of the nineteenth century. Trained as an engineer, Parker was deeply involved in the Senecas' land disputes with the Ogden Land Company and he played an important role in interpreting Seneca culture for a white audience, most notably as a consultant for Lewis Henry Morgan. Collected by Arthur C. Parker, the Ely Samuel Parker Papers include correspondence, manuscripts, and printed materials relating primarily to Seneca affairs, history, language, and culture, as well as politics, education, engineering, and the Civil War. Among Parker's correspondents were Henry Clay, Millard Fillmore, Henry M. Flagler, Lewis Henry Morgan, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, Daniel Webster, and Asher Wright. Several letters relate to Parker's service as engineer of public buildings in Galena, Illinois, and to his Masonic activities. Among the noteworthy items in the collection are several essays on Seneca history and culture, a fragment of Parker's diary, 1847, and a significant quantity of material on the Seneca language assembled by Asher Wright.
