Some of these records also document Loran's involvement with the Fine Arts Museum, Friends of Ethnic Arts, and the San Francisco Art Institute. In addition, there are records related to Loran's role in a donation of forty-five paintings by Hans Hofmann to the University Art Center. Also found are materials related to Loran's activities as an art collector including sales receipts, auction catalogs, and photographs of artwork owned by Loran.Writings by Loran include a complete manuscript version of <emph render="italic">Cézanne's Composition</emph> along with additional notes and drafts, and numerous other short essays on Cézanne's life and art. Loran's other writings include essays about Hans Hofmann, Marsden Hartley, symbology in abstract art, and contemporary art.Loran's career as an artist is extensively documented by four linear feet of original artwork, mostly preliminary sketches. The work demonstrates a variety of techniques including watercolor, pastel, pencil, pen, gouache, and oil sketches. Content includes landscapes, portraits, fantasy scenes, urban scenes, and rural scenes. Printed materials include extensive newsclippings from seven decades, exhibition announcements, and exhibition catalogs. Photographs are of Loran, his second wife Clyta, the Loran family, friends and colleagues, artwork, and source materials. Also found within the papers is an audio recording on cassette of a lecture by Loran on Cézanne.

Sandler, Irving, 1925-. Irving Sandler papers, ca. 1950-2000.
Title:
Irving Sandler papers, ca. 1950-2000.
The Irving Sandler Papers comprehensively document the career of an American critic who chronicled and commented upon the contemporary art scene for five decades. The foundation of Sandler's biographical approach to art criticism is the informal interview or "conversation" with the artist; the archive comprises all Sandler's notes, transcripts, and audio tapes of these encounters. Though the core of the archive is the material about 1950s abstract expressionist artists, artists and art movements of subsequent decades are amply documented, with special attention to Alex Katz, Phillip Pearlstein, and Al Held. Sandler also took copious notes on panel discussions; such notes appear in several series, and form the foundation of the Art Professional series which, like the Artists series, spans five decades. Notes on panel discussions are also central to the Organizations and Associations series, and in particular to the documentation of the Artists' Club, of which Sandler was Program Director for seven years. Many interviews and panels from Series I through V were also recorded and appear in Series XIV, Audiotapes and Videotapes. The Organizations and Associations series reflects, along with Sandler's role as critic, his active support for emergent artists. The Artists' Space files chronicle the difficulty of establishing a physical space, and also deal with management issues and controversies plaguing early exhibitions. The same series details Sandler's involvement in academic and curatorial organizations, for which he served on the directing board, as he did for numerous foundations and commissions, documented in Series IV. Sandler's career as a professor, independent curator, and reviewer is documented in Series V. through IX. Correspondence is professional, with editors regarding reviewing assignments, with curators regarding exhibitions, and with university administrators regarding promotion. Sandler's longstanding column for The New York Post appears in typescript in Series VI. Writings and in clippings in Series XIII. Printed Matter. Printed Matter also contains an interesting assortment of announcements and brochures for exhibitions Sandler presumably attended.

United States Sanitary Commission records. Army and Navy Claim Agency archives, 1861-1870
Title:
United States Sanitary Commission records. Army and Navy Claim Agency archives 1861-1870
The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.
